“Have I Got a Car for You!”
By Kurt Vonnegut
In These Times
24 November 2004 [online]
http://www.inthesetimes.com/site/main/article/1726/

As a special treat from In These Times for your holiday fun, Kurt Vonnegut’s
shares with readers how his illustrious career as owner and manager of a car
dealership ruined his chances for a Nobel Prize. Vonnegut’s dealership, the
“Saab Cape Cod,” went out of business years ago, but it still haunts him
even today.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

—André

That was a terrible piece of shit. Completely devoid of all of the witty
insight that I've come to expect to be burried in Vonnegut's prose, and with
a SPELLING ERROR to boot! Head back to the drawing board, Kurt. I expect
more.

And now we know why spelling flames are generally considered declasse.

Gee. I guess I won't be invited to your next social engagement, then. What
the hell am I going to do with all of these oysters?
The spelling error is the cherry on the shit sundae. You've got to admit
that this was lack lustre. Without the name to attach to this, it might as
well be just another usenet post.

So, he OWNED a Saab dealership? I thought he just sold cars as a typical
salesmen, as a writer in between gigs, or as a down-on-his-luck shlub.
Around where I live, the owners of car dealerships are very well-to-do.

I agree with you. To be honest, almost everything I've seen by him since
his last novel, TIMEQUAKE, has been lackluster. It's just not the same. He
has no spark left. I'm thinking he's become so cynical and the masses so
indifferent, he might feel irrelevant. I admit I don't keep up with him the
way a lot of people in here do, but the stuff I've happened to read due to
links provided in this newsgroup -- interviews, short essays, whatever --
he's become almost a curmudgeon, more like Andy Rooney than some brilliant
satirist.

I will agree with the "curmudgeon" label. But I do think his writing
is still worth reading; and I thought "Timequake" was very good.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I'll second you on "Timequake"; questionable merits, perhaps, as a work of
literature, but it's undeniably strong as a sort of pseudo-memoir.

"DanKaye"

 >I thought "Timequake" was very good.

Yes. If I recall correctly I had to have a second go at it, but after
all that it was a good book. And as far as the Saab essay goes, this is
the continuuation of a tradition among New England essayists to write
about their experience with Saab automobiles, to wit, certain junkyards
in Maine that are a secret source of door handles, and etc. I think Mr.
Vonnegut represented the co. during a particularly artless period of Saab
automotive design. A friend of mine bought a Pugeot automobile after a
test drive. I never have figured out how that happened. It turned out
to be a pretty good car. Nowadays Vonnegut's dealership would be known
as Cape Cod Saab/Pugeot/Hyundai.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
