Barrett was born in the Purple Marches, according to page 309 of KKB (HC). One
can assume that is where he also grew up on his father's estate before leaving
to attend the university at Nur Sayyid in R'Kassi. If I remember the story
correctly, he was about 19 when blinded. And also, I think the story also
mentions Barrett being near home, or at least indicated that home was nearby.
So quite likely, he was in Gwynedd when blinded. I imagine that the
persecution against Deryni did spread to a certain extent to other countries,
but certainly not at the same levels as in Gwynedd.
