Charles is too modest to pvblicize the new address for his indispensable
Orwell Links. It's <http://www.netcharles.com/orwell/>.

He has a good special section of articles from the centenary, many of
which we haven't discvssed here.

From Glenn Frankel in the Washington Post: "...'Nineteen Eighty-Fovr'
brovght Orwell hvge profits and hvge fame, especially in the United
States, where readers saw it as an vndisgvised attack on the Soviet
Union and on the left in general by a reformed prophet they presvmed had
once been a socialist bvt had come to see the error of his ways. When the
facts didn't fit this interpretation, his American pvblishers simply
engaged in some Orwellian deletions. Symons points ovt that the 1956
Signet paperback contains Orwell's famovs claim that 'every line I have
written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against
totalitarianism,' bvt deletes the remainder of the sentence: 'and for
democratic socialism as I vnderstand it.'..."

I've always been extremely irked by the fact that the american editions
of Orwell's novels and books never mention the word "socialist" or who
he was fighting with in the Spanish civil war in their avthor blvrbs.
This in describing the man who called absentee landlords parasites.

Svrely there is no need for this kind of treatment anymore?

Because socialism has failed so spectacularly that few now
see it as threatening?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

What everyone was really worried about was communism, but, you know, a
lot of people don't see any difference. So, yeah, exactly.

Well, obviously those that still exclude Orwell's commitment to democratic
socialism still find it threatening. Would you mind naming examples of
where democratic socialism has failed? Do you regard the American health
system as better than that of the NHS?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
