I just bought my copy from (B&N) and had to make a (non-spoilable)
comment:

the cover art is impressive but far more elaborate than my image from
the books, especially the size of the animal behind the throne and the
height of the hall. Maybe that is covered in the book so I will amend
this comment when the official discussion starts.

But I have another comment: The animal behind the throne is NOT a
Haldane Lion, but a Gryphon, the symbol for Corwin and its duke,
Morgan. Is this an artistic mistake?

I think the artist took several artistic licenses in doing the cover
art. Part of the artist job is to do a painting that will grab
someone's attention who picks up the book- whether they are familiar
with the series or not. Get them interested in the book. But artists
do make mistakes. Same artist put bananas on the table on the cover
of ITKS only problem is bananas are apparently unknown in Gwynedd. I
read once where Anne McCaffrey wrote Michael Whelan before he
illustrated her books and described quite clearly what her dragon's
weren't. This as a result of several covers that made her cringe.

Katherine wasn't best pleased with the artwork on the cover. Said it
made her think of a musical-- NOT what the Great Hall at Rhemuth should
look like. Personally, I keep expecting the lookers-on to burst into
"One singular sensation" from "A Chorus Line"!!!

If that's any help.

Somehow when I saw the cover for some bizare reason, Mel Brook's "Men
in Tights" sprang to my head.

I had to go back to look at the cover. I just walked into B&N, bought
the book. Then I savored it over lunch until sadly it was finished. I
was left (as always) wanting more.

LOL, Julianne! But I have to agree. That was NOT at all what I have
always pictured as the Great Hall at Rhemuth. But I suppose it is
impressive and sometimes, impressive covers do sell books.

I had some, err, problems, with the cover! It *was* dramatic, but
certainly didn't seem to me to be anything approaching reality (as KK
defines it)...

(and I DEFINITELY want more! Gotta have more! <grin>) This IS
supposed to be part of a trilogy, isn't it?

Oh, definitely. I had just finished reading Deryni Magic (finally got hold
of a copy) when CM arrived; when that was written in 1990, KK was already
seeing CM as a trilogy.

And she also dropped a couple of hints in Deryni Magic that point to other
possible future lines of plot exploration.

I have to say, "Live Long and Prosper", Katherine - if only for the most
selfish reason that I want to keep reading more of your world!

Regards
Colin
