Gee and here I thought there would be a flood of comments now that we
hit the decided date to begin discussions. Just a few of my
observations are below:
1: Sir Se` seems to have a knack of showing up at odd times. Portals
could explain some of it but it doesn't explain getting word to him
wherever he might be and also him getting to places where portals don't
exist- or at least we haven't heard of them. Does make me a little
curious about the Anvilers.
2. Continuing to tease up about Lewys Ap Norfal is unfair.- Codex will
have to be changed some.
3. Rhydon (later of Eastmarch fame) appearance was surprising though
guess it shouldn't be, as it was known at one time he was a member of
the council. Interesting view of him.
4. Somehow Donal's demise was just a little convienent to my way of
thinking. Alyce I was prepared for from hints we have received in the
other books. Donal lost children before, he still had his heir and a
spare plus 1 (Richard) so while a childs death is something to morn, it
wasn't unheard of in those days- even if it was not a typical death.
Donal just seems to have given up.
5. Brion I liked, it was good to see him in life and not just
someone's memory. Also the glimpse's of a few of the chararcters we
are familiar with at a much earlier age.
6. Wencit: glad to see him make an appearance
Just a few comments to see if things can be kick started. Overall I
enjoyed the book, it was much tighter story than ITKS but covered a
shorter span and also didn't have to introduce us to as many new
characters. Will be interesting to see where Katherine takes the third
book.
Have a good new year

the books are called Childe Morgan, not Childe Arilan in case you
forgot
of course I still feel the entire series is about Morgan (Camber his
ancestor, Kelson his king, Duncan his cousin, Arilan his
pain-in-the-neck conscience) >> Stay informed about: Child Morgan- Spoiler |

Your right I forgot about those. Thought that was interesting. Guess
we will have to wait and see if Jamyl thinks it is worth mentioning.
Does this mean maybe that Kenneth could be empowered like the
Haldanes.
Does this make Morgan 51% Deryni instead of just the lowly half-breed
he is.

where exactly did Derry come from? is he related to the Morgans? his
name is a good Irish one but it certainly teases. For that matter
where did 'deryni' come from? It could mean 'resident of Derry' in one
sense? >> Stay informed about: Child Morgan- Spoiler |

That was *my* wondering, too. Unless he (and/or the Anvillers) have
some way of telepathy-at-a-distance, it could be a plot hole. But we
KNEW that SOMEONE had to help save Brion at this point.

He WAS more human (in a manner of speaking...) in this book, but I
suppose it's because RHIP and he IS king, but he came across several
times as brusque overly demanding of especially Alyce. Though, I
suppose he thought had reason to. It, of course fits very well with
the picture we got of him, too in ITKS, but I DID like him better in
CM.
I withhold judgment on Brion. We don't know enough about him right
now, but he seems to have the presence his father had plus (at least
right now) a more human approach. Certainly very good at diplomacy.

I got the impression tat he is/was (will be?) more like Derry. I
wonder, too, how much of that has to do with close, nay, intimate
contact with a Deryni. That it may be "latent" in all humans, but it
takes some trigger (or long association). Interesting issue, that!

These spaces intentionally left blank.
Definitely in agreement with the Anvillers- I am most curious about them now
more than ever. It is possible that there was some sort of direct psychic
link between Se and Alyce, but that doesn't explain how he got around so
darned quickly. Yeah, Portals and all, but he sure had a knack for showing
up just at the right moment. And with the comparative slowness of
communication at that time period, particularly in winter, it is just
intriguing to think about how he knew so much so quickly.
I kept reading things that filled in background or hinted at or in some few
cases, actually explained some things from "later" stories, and finding
myself thinking "Hmmmmm" or "Now, *that's* interesting." Things like
finding a bit more about Rhydon (as jerry mentioned), the hints at Lewys ap
Norfal and the possible continuation of his experiments, a bit of Wencit
(and finding out that it appears, at least by reputation, he was always a
rotten fellow!), things like that.
Donal- While he did come across a bit more sympathetic in this book than
ITKS, I still have a hard time liking the man. Really, after all that
happened in ITKS and earlier in this one, I just think he MIGHT have talked
to Kenneth and Alyce about Alaric's Naming ceremony and his preferred choice
for a Name. I think both parents would have agreed that Airleas was a
perfect choice (tho I would like to have known what Alyce originally planned
to use), and, I think, would have gone along with whatever Donal ended up
doing when he barged in on them. I know- he's the King and used to getting
his way and not necessarily asking permission and all that, but you would
think that after all that had gone on between he and Alyce and Kenneth, he
would have had the decency to at least ask. All in all, I'm still stuck
with the feeling that, of all the Haldane kings we have come to know in some
way well, the only one I really like is Kelson.
I, too, liked seeing more of Brion. It will be interesting to see how he
develops in the next book. Maybe there will be two Haldane kings I end up
liking a bit!
All in all, I thought it was a good book. Yes, better than ITKS- if only
for the more cohesive storyline and some real development rather than simply
sketching in background, as I felt with ITKS. Maybe a tad too much Alaric
for my taste (ok, you *KNOW* I HAD to say that!!! LOL). Tho, I must admit
that when he put the feathers under Mummy's shoulders and gave her Lady

Well jeez, what didja expect--the Childe LORIS trilogy???? =o)
Me, I can't help feel that THIS should have been the first book in the
trilogy. And it's still really more about Alaric's parents and Donal
Haldane than it is about Alaric himself. KK's going to have a LOT of
his life to cover in book three.
CM's a better book than ITKS, yes. More cohesive. But I think it
should have covered more of Alaric's childhood. And I still feel a
certain degree of emotional disengagement on KK's part that I did not
sense with her earlier books.
/end grumbling... for now.

I found this book more in flavor with some of the other books though it
was still a little stand offish if that makes sense.
Given where she started with the book stopping at Brion's coronation
was a logical point. Would have been nice to have more but given what
we know of the history, it was a good point as I think she would have
been hard pressed to carry the story forward smoothly I would think.
Of course this means that she has about 24 years to cover to bring the
series to the start of Deryni Rising which I think was the original
intent of the series and I don't see that happening. So it is a
question of where will she start the next book.
Alaric coming to court as a page?
Closer to the Marluk conflict? This would bring Jehanna into play and
possibly could wrap up with Kelson's birth. Also could possibly answer
the question of how Rhydon winds up with Wencit. But would be too
early for Coram taking his place.
Either of these would probably skip the death of Kenneth.
Possibly start closer to DR, with Wencit and Clarissa's schemings and
conditions with Torenth falling apart.
Just a few things I would like to see covered and may not get to:
Sir Se`- sorry his popping in and out just bothers me for some reason.
KK may be setting us up for something in the third book, will see.
Zoe Morgan- as she doesn't play in the future books is she dead by DR
(yes I understand that DR was written 36 years ago and KK hadn't
thought things out this far- still need to resolve) Maybe they just
have lands of their own now.
Jehanna- would like to see her before she finds out about Brion's
powers and Alaric being Deryni
Does Kenneth tell Brion about Jamyl Arilan being Deryni, if so this
would mean that Brion knew that other Arilan guy was Deryni also.
Which might beg the question of did the King have something to do with
Dennis gettting through the ordination.
Torenth
Rhydon
Coram
list goes on and on.
Sadly I think only a small part will get covered in the next book.

That's something that has occurred to me before, Wes, that maybe prolonged
exposure to Deryni gives 'normal humans' some sensitivity. I think there are
some other cases that look like that in other books, IIRC. Although it still
doesn't explain Warin.
Since Deryni are interfertile with other humans, it seems more than likely
to me that they are a mutation that emphasises an existing trait, rather
than something completely new.

Say, MAK, I thought that they thought of the genealogy bit for Warin
(or, perhaps, it was just speculation here), but pretty-much
determined that they could find nothing like that in his ancestry.
(but it surely would explain his anomalous behavior...)
I think that Katherine is in the midst of telling us something (I just
don't know what, yet)
