Visted Chincoteague this weekend - for an island of 3,000 on the east
coast of Virginia, it does pretty well to have 2 used bookstores. Neither
are in the phone directory, I just spotted them while driving around. One
is on Main St. in the downtown area, with ivy growing over the sign
outside, obscuring the store's name. Inside the books are stacked willy
nilly, many hard to get to, some on top of each other *between* shelves.
The other is also on Main, it is "Daedalus East Used Books" and is in a
big white house. It is organized much better. For a small conservative
town, I found some neat books that have all had tangles with the law over
censorship issues:
"Brave New World," Aldous Huxley, a hardback from 1932, Sundial Press,
Garden City. I've seen similar copies for sale on Ebay claiming they are
first editions - I don't think this one really is but haven't found points
for the US versions yet. (London Chatto and Windus is genuine first) The
copyright page merely says "Copyright 1932/By Doubleday, Doran & Company,
Inc." I can't find much on Sundial Press.
"Tropic of Capricorn," Henry Miller, a variant of the 7th Obelisk
paperback edition from 1953, says "Must not be imported into England or
U.S.A" on the back.
(got edition info from this very useful site:

"The Essential Lenny Bruce," Ed. by John Cohen. This is apparently a
genuine first edition, Ballentine paperback. It later was printed in
hardback. It's not particularly valuable except that it contains
transcriptions of a bunch of his routines and I haven't read it before!
"Slaughterhouse-Five," Kurt Vonnegut, beat-up paperback from a 'free
books' box. I'm going to liberate the page with the epitaph on it and hang
it up somewhere.
Under $10 for the lot.
Got lots of seashells and a sunburn for free!
