The passing of a man who was both himself an author as well as the
onscreen portrayer of many authors' fictional characters makes me
very, very sad. Christopher Reeve had made such wonderful progress
and I thought if anyone could find a cure for such an affliction as
his, he could. All of the very best thoughts and feelings to his
family and to his many loyal, devoted, wonderful, and supportive fans
around the world!

What has any of this have to do with children's books?

Uh, he was an ACTOR (and a poor one), not a scientist. How on earth could he
have found a cure?

Spontaneous tribute: my first reaction on reading this news elsewhere
online was "Died? I didn't know he was sick." Yeah, he was what was
once called a basket case. Obviously. But he let it slow him down so
little that I'd gotten out of the habit of thinking of it as a
physical illness.

Are you that stupid that you think an off topic message stating that an
acyor can cure his own disease is somehow appropriate for this group?
People die every day - that's life.
I didn't know the man and his death doesn't affect me one bit.

So you are this hateful in real life. Here's hoping that you don't get
in an accident and become a paraplegic.

At first I didn't understand what you meant by "basket case" (I'm used
to it meaning "hopelessly mad") but dictionary.com says it's also an
offensive term for a four-limb amputee (which Reeve was not but for
all intents he might as well have been). I'm now interested in the
origin of that expression. Ideas anyone?

It took a medical team of four experts to keep him alive for his trip
across country to the Academy Awards a few years ago, but he made it.
His condition had improved a bit since then, but was still very grave.
What I meant by finding a cure was he was not a doctor or scientist
but a very, very active patient and activist in investigating and
developing treatments. He will certainly be remembered and revered
regardless of how far down the road a cure may be.

I've always understood that the second definition simply referred to
the amputee's having to be "carried around in a basket."

I think you're right and I was in error to use the expression for a
patient with attached but non-working limbs.

You poor thing. Your one (main, obvious) problem seems to be hatred
and hostility to others in general. To read about some REAL problems,
check this out: http://groups.google.com/groups?dq=&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&threadm=10mm2cc...0qc7a%4
Maybe the FBI will read some of your opinions and turn its attentions
on YOU! (Sic 'em!)
