I gues in part it depends what you mean by "western theater," but for some, the
battle of Franklin was in the "west" (i.e., not the Army of the Potomac/Army of
Northern Virginia).
In any case, I do not know a finer pair of Civil War novels than Howard Bahr's
"The Black Flower" (set amidst the carnage of the battle of Franklin) and "The
Year of Jubilo," which is more or less about the events in a town garrisoned by
a Union regiment right after the war ended.
I strongly recommend both books -- do a search on reviews, if you wish, and you
may see why.
