| Reading both as they came out today, couldn't help but notice there isn't
much fundamental difference between them. I mean, yes the cast and plot is
different but the feel is pretty much the same to me. I thought the Ultimate
line was a good way of updating the original archetypes and thus allow for
more variation and experimentation in the 606 titles. I don't see much sign
of that, post-Morrison. They've even gone back to wearing spandex.

Yes, and in my opinion, it's great. I enjoyed both books. I think Ultimate
X-Men is closer to the Morrison grit. It is there that I expect to see more
variation and experimentation. As such, I find the Claremont/Davis plan
very enjoyable so far.

Me, too. I was tired of the leather look with X's on every body part.
How about an X on the chest? And on the top of the hand? And on the kneepad?
And on the top of the boot? And the back? It was ridiculous.
And who actually liked those fire fighter costumes, anyway? Very poor
design.
I like all of the nex X-costumes execept for Storm's. She has lightning
bolts everywhere. The lightning fringe on the edge of her cape looks funny,
too.

I have to say the new Cyclops costume does NOTHING for me. It looks a
particularly uncomfortable and sweaty version of the outfit, and after
seeing him in the "semi-civvies" look, to switch over to a very sombre, dull
black spandex outfit and say that's how heroes dress makes little sense to
me, heroes like he is trying to aspire to look like tend to wear something
at least a LITTLE more colourful.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Claremont's X-Men and Ultimate X-Men Minor Spoiler |

To be honest, I wasn't all that impressed with UXM #444. I still hate
the characterization of Cannonball. In fact, the whole XSE thing
doesn't sit well with me. I couldn't stop wondering why Wolverine,
Storm, and Nightcrawler were wearing training costumes for any length of
time. Or why Rachel changed her last name. Or why it was ok for three
X-Men to be in the Danger Room when it was already booked. Or the whole
Rachel/Emma thing. Overall, I can't say it's something that has much
appeal for me. I may or may not give it another issue, but I'm not
hopeful.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Claremont's X-Men and Ultimate X-Men Minor Spoiler |

I like Storm's. I think Marvel Girl's could be better, but I absolutely

Maybe they didn't want to ruin their costumes in some Danger Room training
session.

Sam's didn't make much of an impression on me, but I truly despised
Marvel Girl's. Dated geek chic. Honestly, she looks like she'll be
ready to fight evil just as soon as she finishes her soy latte, sends
a few IMs, and downloads that new skin for Sims Online.
It could have something to do with the fact that I think Rachel, as a
character, is more trouble than she's worth.

I liked them. I like the take on the X-Men as not really superheroes
as much as a cultural enclave/school and being immediately
identifiable as such in a semi-spooky/standoffish way.
Costumes are OK too but I'm not liking Storm's or the new Marvel
Girl's...it doesnt look like something Rachel would wear (though I
understand the retroness of it). I think of Rachel as more sleek and
utilitarian but odds are her style (looking back at her under Alan
Davis on Excalibur) would be too visually similar to Sage's since they
are on the same team.
With Storm, its just a step back to a role she left behind long ago
and a smoothing of edges that everyone keeps saying have become sharp
again after her trip to Japan...but visually I just don't see it.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Claremont's X-Men and Ultimate X-Men Minor Spoiler |

I noticed a while back that Sam's new outfit is fairly similar to the
one he wore when he was Mojo-ized in New Mutants annual #2. And both

I think all the costumes (except for Sam) fall back on the costumes they
first wore. The Rachel costume is obviously an homage to her mom, as is the
codename. I wish she had kept the Phoenix codename and costume though. I
think that would show dedication to jean, while remaining true to Rach's
firebrand personality. Another change I'd have wanted: Wolvie in a darker
hue, brown (ala Byrne, to stay retro) or black.

Rachel no longer has any connection with the Phoenix or it's power. She is a
telepath/telekinetic which is what Marvel Girl was. I like that fact that
that is her new codename. I also like the costume. Maybe not the shades...

Claremont has made it clear that the Phoenix is up for grabs. Read his
comments for Xtreme 45's cover, or just read the first few pages of Uncanny
444. Rachel was a telepath/telekinetic when she was Phoenix (as was Jean),
power level not withstanding. It's my personal preference, but it's
feasible.

But during 444, Rachel had the Phoenix brand over her left eye.
I actually liked her better when she was the Hound and wore the red spiked
costume with the face tatoos.
I like Rachel as being an aggressive character with an edge. I mean, she is
emotionally traumatized, you know? She was used to track down fellow mutants
for slaughter. And while I don't think she should be made to dwell on it in
the book, I don't know that I like this whole nice image she's being made to
wear.
There should always be a little wild child and psychosis to her.
