I have a copy of the script for Dread, if anyone is interested mail me
@ Barkerfan.DeleteThis@dodgeit.com and I will send you the transcript in pdf
format.
As a Barker fan I am appalled at the ham-fisted changes made to it.
FADE IN:
EXT. DEAN MADDIN'S HOUSE - NIGHT
The very finest in faculty housing. The street's lined with cars, all
the lights are on, and there's a party underway.
INT. DEAN MADDIN'S HOUSE - NIGHT
A pre-semester mixer. STUDENTS, PROFESSORS and ALUMNI fill the house.
Every room is packed. The CATERING CREW work the party like sharks in
a tank, always moving, offering up a seemingly endless variety of
finger foods. There, in the midst of all this sound and fury, we find
Grace, jammed back in a corner, nursing a warm soda. The past six
months haven't treated him well. Dark circles under his eyes from lack
of sleep. He's lost some weight. His smile is a thing of the past.
Even with all these people around, Grace seems alone. Lonely. Watching
something. Absolutely captivated. Cheryl. On the far side of the room,
entwined with a good-looking older guy, JASON CROWE, a student. She
looks great. Grace can't watch her flirt with Crowe. Grace pushes his
way through the crush of partiers, towards the bar that dominates one
side of the room. He gets the BARTENDER's eye, holds up his Coke.
GRACE
Rum and Coke.
BARTENDER
Let me see an ID.
The Bartender waits. It's obvious Grace isn't old enough.
BARTENDER One regular Coke comin' up.
The guy next to Grace at the bar chuckles, a dry rasp.
QUAID (O.S.) Know why it's so loud? It's the sound of people treading
water. They're afraid.
Grace looks at the guy. He's probably ten years older than Grace, but
they look the same age. He may not spend a lot of money on his
clothes, but he wears them well. He's one of those guys who looks good
no matter how rumpled he is.
