Have You Lived Before This Life? by L. Ron Hubbard
An experiment in past-life recall containing forty-one actual case
histories, Have You Lived Before This Life? is a fascinating account
of a series of auditing sessions in which people recall their own past
existences in other bodies and locations. The book makes no
assertions; it merely recounts the experiences of the individuals who
were audited, giving the details of what they recalled and how felt
about it. The reader is challenged to answer for himself the question
posed by the book's title.
History of the Book:
In the early 1950s, L. Ron Hubbard broke through the barrier of memory
and the myth of "one life," as people receiving Dianetics auditing
recalled earlier and earlier incidents in their own existences. These
experiences sparked a rash of excitement and controversy about the
subject of past lives, within the Dianetics community as well as
outside of it. Skeptics questioned the veracity of past-life recall
and the reliability of those who claimed having memories of previous
lifetimes.
At the Fifth London Advanced Clinical Course held in October and
November of 1958, forty-one Scientologists, many of them skeptical
about the subject of past lives, were audited on a new engram-running
technique. Asking them only for "the engram necessary to resolve the
case," not requesting or even intimating past lives, the doubters were
convinced as case after case recalled existences much earlier than the
present life. The actual case histories of these Scientologists were
first published in 1960, entitled Have You Lived Before This Life? An
expanded version of the book was released in 1977, which contained
additional articles by LRH on modern processing and on the phenomena
of death. In 1989, the book was updated and re-released with a full
glossary, bibliography and detailed index.
Subjects Covered:
The subject of past lives has been addressed by many religions through
the ages. Have You Lived Before This Life? however, is objective
rather than theoretical or opinionated. The major portion of the book
is devoted to the auditing case histories of individuals, detailing
their memories of past lives. These case histories graphically show
how a person's attitudes and actions in present time can be affected
by incidents in his or her past lifetimes. They also document the
improvements that occurred when such incidents were addressed and run
out in auditing. Throughout the book, death is put in its proper
perspective.
As Mr. Hubbard writes in the Epilogue: "The first thing one should
learn about death is that it is not anything of which to be very
frightened. If you are frightened of losing your pocketbook, if you
are frightened of losing your memory, if you are frightened of losing
your girl or your boyfriend, if you are frightened of losing your body
- well that is how frightened you ought to be of dying, because it is
all the same order of magnitude."
Some of the questions answered by this book are:
" How does a thetan behave when the body dies?
" Why do people forget having lived before?
" What causes someone to have a "famous person" fixation?
" When and how does a thetan pick up a new body?
Read the accounts and decide for yourself - have you lived before this
life?
