I'm looking at a copy of The Riddle of Samson, by Andrew Garve (Collins/Crime
Club,1954). There is no jacket flap price. Normally, I would figure this to be
a book club edition, but it came from the library of a very astute mystery
collector, and has "1st Ed." pencilled on the front endpaper. Is this a trade
edition, or is the previous owner's notation an error? Thanks!

I don't know anything myself about the flap price, but I have quite a
few Ngaio Marsh books from the 1950s (all UNjacketed, alas), and
Collins did *not* use the words "first editon" or "first printing" at
this period, so don't let their absence discourage you.

{specific to CCC]

Before leaving the world of the book clubs I ought to say that not
everything that looks like a club edition is

Collins Crime Club, for instance, is the crime imprint of Collins.
This means most of the Collins crime First Editions (Agatha Christie
Etc.) say crime club on them.

Jacket Variations

Jackets without the retail price printed on them.

[General - which you will already know but other readers may not]

It has been the normal practice of many well known publishers since
about the middle of the 1970s to produce a club overrun of the first
edition. What this means in many cases, is that the only difference
between the first edition and the book club edition, is that the
latter has no price printed on the jacket.

But your title predates the 70's of course.

For some strange reason - 8:0 - there appear to be an awful
lot of CC\C titles about with price clipped jackets. Which suggests
that they do exist.

Is there any possibility that this collector was himself a subscriber
to the Collins\Crime Club perhaps?

Apologies that was a rather foolish question.

a) because he'd then presumably have had other C\CC titles in his
collection as well.
b) He presumably wouldn't have then pecilled First Ed. in it himself.

Posssibly it was simply mis-described by the original vendor
