Apologies if this already appeared, but it didn't on my newsreader!
Do comets dream? by S P Somtow.
This is not a great novel, but not only did I enjoy it, I thought it would
have made a better plot for the recent Star Trek picture than Nemesis. It
was a good science fiction story which involved the Enterprise, but was
not centred on it.
The Enterprise is sent to assist a planet which has a tradition that every
five thousand years the world is destroyed, and everyone is reincarnated.
A comet is tootling along on a collision course, going to hit the planet
dead on time.
The problem is that blowing up the comet will cause the society of the
planet to implode. Can the crew solve the problem without blowing up the
comet? There is never a drama about getting away on time. The leader of
the planet has given them permission to do so. But can they find another
solution?
There are faults with the story. The fact that it could have made a film
indicates that it is not really long enough for a good novel. Information
about the nature of the problem is handed to the Enterprise crew on a
plate, in a fairly incredible way. The author overlooks the fact that
Deanna Troi is empathic, not telepathic. The aliens are extraordinarily
amenable to having their whole belief system overthrown.
All the same, I enjoyed this book.
