I have copy of the unabridged Compact Oxford English Dictionary which has
been bound upside down, and I am trying to find out whether or not it has
any collectible value above the value of the book itself. So far, I have
been unable to find out any information online.

If anyone can give me some rough estimate, or can tell me where I can find
out more information on my own, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Generally speaking errors like this do not add to collectibility, though
you never can tell what people will put a value on. I would expect this
error to impair the value, because it makes the book slightly harder to
use (you either have to shelve it upside down or remember to flip it when
you take it down from the shelf).

Book collectors are not like stamp collectors. They don't regard errors
as adding to rarity value. (There _are_ errors which make books valuable,
but generally for other reasons. The Adulterer's Bible* springs to mind.)

*If you've not heard of this, it's an old printing of the Bible which
insists "Thou _shalt_ commit adultery".

No. The flaw in the binding is just a flaw. It detracts from, rather than
adds to, the value of the book.

There are several threads about this kind of thing in the newsgroup
archives. Here is a recent one:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://tinyurl.com/ymtg" target="_blank">http://tinyurl.com/ymtg</a>

For precise information about this particular copy, it would help if you
stated what edition it is and its general condition apart from the flaw, but
a two-volume set with magnifying glass in very good condition would be
well-priced at around $150-$200. If the supplementary third volume was
present, or if it was the one-volume edition it would be worth rather more.
Then you'd have to knock something off for the flaw.

Check what prices are being asked for unflawed copies of your edition on ABE
(http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookSearch). Bear in mind that the higher
priced copies may well not fetch the asking price. If you want to know the
prices of actual sales you could check to see if there are any copies listed
under completed auctions on eBay. Then knock a chunk off the price. Quite
how big a chunk it's hard to say. It might sell at a 20% discount, but then
again it might not. The bigger the discount the better the chances of
finding a buyer. If I wanted a copy for reference and saw it being offered
at half-price because of the flaw I'd probably go for it.

Since it's a heavy book and shipping charges will be high a bricks and
mortar shop would be an advantage, and you might do just as well (if you
want to sell it) taking it to a dealer.

If you want the value for insurance or other purposes, it's impossible to
say without knowing what edition it is, but I'd say if you knocked a quarter
to a third off what an unflawed copy might fetch that'd be about right.
