Anyone know what happened to this series, begun in 1990? It was
supposed to present all of Asimov's short stories and novels in uniform
bindings. It started with volumes 1 and 2 of his short stories (and
the fact that they did not start chronologically with Marooned off
Vesta and continue onward torques me...) but I see no evidence that it
went on from there.

I didn't realize it was Asimov himself putting together the stories,
but rather his editors at Doubleday. With his death, it would have
seemed all the more reason to continue putting everything out in
uniform bindings.

Maybe they'll do it better - and completely - next time and start
chronologically.

Essentially, Asimov died in the beginning of 1992 and that put an end
to almost all of the works (and collections) he was working on.

The Complete Stories was the short stories piece of the plan to publish
everything in uniform bindings. My understanding is that the plan to
publish a hardcover set was dropped, while Bantam Spectra proceeded with
plans to do a paperback set, but then those plans too did not come to
fruition. I don't know exactly what happened, but I get the vague
impression that the effect of Asimov's death on the publishing world was
analogous to the death of historical figures such as Alexander the
Great; after they were gone, their empires fell apart. Asimov didn't
build a publishing empire, but it seems that a significant number of
people in the publishing world who worked with him moved on to new
positions shortly before or after his death.
