The Complete Stories was the short stories piece of the plan to publish
everything in uniform bindings. My understanding is that the plan to
publish a hardcover set was dropped, while Bantam Spectra proceeded with
plans to do a paperback set, but then those plans too did not come to
fruition. I don't know exactly what happened, but I get the vague
impression that the effect of Asimov's death on the publishing world was
analogous to the death of historical figures such as Alexander the
Great; after they were gone, their empires fell apart. Asimov didn't
build a publishing empire, but it seems that a significant number of
people in the publishing world who worked with him moved on to new
positions shortly before or after his death.
