I note that Crick reckons that Orwell's "Such Such were the joys" lays it on
thick when talking of murky stool infested sea water, saying that in pre
pollution Britain it should have been clean. Also mentioning "Coming up for
Air" and the polluted ponds he says this should be seen as pure metaphor as
no way it would have been like that.
I wonder where Mr Crick was when he grew up in the UK born as he was in
1929 - in the 60's our local Canal was heavily polluted with industrial
effluent and tipped rubbish ( for overseas readers I live in the Industrial
Midlands of the UK and there are more canals here than Venice !!) and had
been like it long before WW2 as these water ways through the industrial
areas were well used & abused. Fly tipping was endemic and going to any UK
beach you would see the giant pipes to take the sewage (raw) out into the
high tide.
Only in the early 80's did the clean up begin , the canals now are beautiful
wildlife havens tipping is far less than it was and "waste" ground has been
cleaned up and looked after . As for the beaches no sewage is pumped out now
and they are lovely and clean many having the EU Blue flag for cleanliness.
Just a thought - enjoying the first few pages of Cricks - a good sign
