I've been reading King since around the time of The Stand, so all said and
done over twenty five years. Early on I have to say I really enjoyed all
the little references to, and recurring characters from, his previous
novels. I can't remember my first time.maybe it was Cujo and the 'Hell too
hot for you, Frank?' part. God knows.
While I was reading DT5 (which I have to say I enjoyed somewhat more than I
thought I would), I thought that harking back to Father/Pere Callahan was a
great thing.it certainly gave some back story and closure on an individual
that was otherwise MIA after he fled the Lot. I thought it a good twist
that the Calla version of Callahan discovers he may only be a character in a
novel and gave some consideration as to how King would explain this away
over the next two novels.

Well anyway, I've just finished DT6. Not wanting to give too much away, it
ebbed and flowed like any novel. There are the 'fast' parts (Eddie and
Roland on Earth, the shootout), slow parts (for me elements of the
Susannah/Detta/Odetta/Mia quadrangle), but all in all a decent enough read.
That said, I feel I have to put on record that the low point for me was I
reached and read through the passage where Roland and Eddie meet King, who
at that juncture had only written the initial six parts that make up the
first Gunslinger novel and how Roland both hypnotises and seeds him with the
ideas for the next book(s). I know you have to allow the guy some poetic
licence but I really got to wondering where Stephen's head was when he was
writing that segment, whether he thought it was a hoot (probably), or was a
little embarrassed by the whole thing (probably not, he's just watching the
dollars come rolling in).

I suspect that King casting himself in the story will be a point of
contention for a lot of people. For me, it provided an interesting window
into what could have been going on with him during the writing of the
series. I found that part very interesting and illuminating. It also
underscores the extent to which the DT story has woven itself throughout so
many of King's stories over the years while the story itself percolated in
his unconscious mind <g>. In spite of that, I found it somewhat
self-indulgent while I was reading it. The ending of the book made up for
any misgivings I had about King casting himself
I am curious how King is going to wrap all this up where all the loose ends
he has created in past novels get addressed.

I may be the only one but I think DT6 doesn't suck at all. I definitely LOVE
this idea of King within the story. It explains so much. I understand you
may feel weird after reading the book because it obviously doesn't go the
way you expected it... You wished for an ending and that's another one
that's appearing on the horizon. Maybe this is the reason of the way most of
you feel after reading DT6.
As far as I am concerned, I had followed all rumors that appeared on the
Internet for quite a while and a lot of theme prepared us for these
events... That's why I'm not shocked at all. The book is exactly what I
expected it to be.

I really need to go buy this book. I mean, it's been out for HOURS now.
Oy. Maybe tomorrow.
Have a great day!

Bought it yesterday, finished it at lunch today. I loved it. I thought it was
right up there with the rest of them. I still want to know who Jamie DeCurry

God there a ton of loose ends... I can't believe I'm going to get all the
answers I require in the next book... even if it were 1000 pages.

Yes, but quite a few loose ends were tied up in SOS. It did generate more
questions, though...and I sure want to see Jack Sawyer again as well as Parkus
before the end.

I think maybe King wanted to quash the speculation that he himself was either
the Crimson King or was at the top of the Tower. You know he must read the
theories sites. I think he HAD to put himself into the story. In the Coda at
the end, you get the feeling that King did not create Roland's world, he just
channeled it with words. Leaves me wondering:
1) Did King create the alternate universes
or
2) Did King simply have a mental pipeline to the alternate universe?
The SOS King, that is. This was a very good story. I highly enjoyed it. I
will be rereading it before long.

Err... I don't think there were very many loose ends tied up in SoS at all.

>Err... I don't think there were very many loose ends tied up in SoS at all.
For me, personally, there were. More new questions asked than old ones
answered, but quite a few things were answered...for me. Everyone gets
something different out of a story, that's one of the wonderful things about
them.
