First apologies if this has been covered before but I'm currently rereading
the Dahak series and I've come across a 'dodgy' section. When Colin
activates Operation Lacoon and creates a hyperspace lockout of the Aku
'Ultan how do the hyper missiles still work ??
If a ship can't enter hyperspace why can a missile ? Is it a mass issue ?
DW doesn't mention it anywhere that I have seen but he may have said
something somewhere else that I have missed.
Any answers appreciated.

Since hyper missiles also work inside the hyper limit of a star, I
wouldn't worry about it. >> Stay informed about: Dahak series question. |

Well, that is an odd inconsistency. Only thing I can think of is that
the missiles are launched into hyper by the firing ship, instead of
being self-hypering? Bit of a reach, but... >> Stay informed about: Dahak series question. |

Smaller mass can go into hyper closer to the big mass? >> Stay informed about: Dahak series question. |

I asked David the 'hypermissiles-within-the-hyper-threshold'
question many moons ago.
I asked if it was a function of mass and his reply was "Yep."
So... you can surmise that there is a really, _really_ steep
drop-off in allowable hyper-mass at some multi-lightminute range from
a stellar mass, yet still allows rather small masses to boost into
hyper.
The range at which the steep "knee" exists depends on the type of
hyperdrive. (Note that for starship-level masses, the Aku'Ultan could
hyper in closer to a star than the Fourth Imperium. I also believe
that the Fifth Imperium's hyper drive let it move in even closer than
the Aku'Ultan to the same star.)

Yeah but that's sort of the point. Unless we assume that smaller object
mass affects the hyper limit (which is not stated) then that also shouldn't
be true.
Just something that crossed my mind the other day

Why is that? It sounds a perfectly valid, hyperthetical question. >> Stay informed about: Dahak series question. |

As God is my witness... that was an accident!
Really!
I reread the message after posting it and groaned a bit, myself.

Apparently--after all, hyper missiles could be launched right off

No, only the Acultanni missiles have external hyper drives. Imperium
missiles have internal hyper drives. >> Stay informed about: Dahak series question. |

No, they have to launched from vacuum, otherwise the air screws the
targeting solutions to hell and gone. Remember how (briefly) surprised
one of Anu's fighter pilots was when the other two fighers in his wing
got vaped out of nowhere? He looks at his readouts and see they were
hypoer missiles and has the thought that Dahak must still be
operational... >> Stay informed about: Dahak series question. |

You're not contradicting me.
Yes, they must launch from vacuum. The big PDC's of the seige could
fire them from the surface, though. They had huge evacuated tubes to
fire from. >> Stay informed about: Dahak series question. |
