A nice article, but I wonder what difference it makes if the critics
continue to glower at and the public continues to read her. If it were
me, I would much rather have millions of satisfied readers than even
one snobby academic or critic on my side.

Fine writers live on, no matter what the critics have to say. There
are other writers the critics have tried to kill but without much
success. And the academics--most of them--are ideology driven, so
they would love to banish some writers who don't come up to their
standards.

Does anyone really want to read through books and essays dissecting
everything du Maurier wrot? Not this reader.
