would want to know the news. Besides, there will be a LOT of birthdays

David Daiches dies, aged 92
EBEN HARRELL
DAVID Daiches, Scottish author and literary critic who has published
seminal books on Edinburgh, Scotland and Robert Burns, has died. He was
92.
Born in Sunderland but raised in Edinburgh, Dr Daiches was educated at
Edinburgh and Oxford universities. In a career spanning nearly 70 years
and 40 titles, Dr Daiches was one of the foremost scholars and critics
of his generation. In Scotland, he is best known for his memoir Two
Worlds, in which he described growing up as the son of a rabbi in 1920s
Edinburgh.
His critical work on Scottish authors was also widely regarded,
including texts on Robert Louis Stevenson, Robert Burns and Sir Walter
Scott.
He is survived by a son and two daughters, including the Edinburgh
author Jenni Calder.
