As titles for short story collection titles go, I think THEY RETURN AT
EVENING by H R Wakefield takes some beating. Here are some others which
don't exist but perhaps should:

* DEAD PEOPLE SIT ON MY BED & OTHER TALL TALES by Elspeth Hardheart

* LOCKED IN FOR THE FRIGHT by Elliot O'Donnell

* CUTTING PEOPLE IS WRONG by Arnold Gougeworthy

* SPIDERS DINE WITH SERVIETTES & OTHER REVOLTING HORRORS by Sir Charles
Birkin

Equally as sad as Pelan's antics are those of fellow SMAM (Sad Middle
Aged Man) Mike Plowman, host of a very yawnsome Coronation Street
website.

Plowman knows next to nothing about ghost fiction. His only interest in
this group is the same as Pelan's.

No offence - and it's testament to your powers of creation - but I
think I can safely say that I cannot think of six books I'd rather
*not* have on my shelves.

Come back Jeffrey Archer, all is forgiven.

Tangentally, I read your post and wondered whether Robert Aickman ever
swore in his stories. I can't recall it. Did he?

Eh, I don't know. I think any one of those writers have/had enough sense
of humor to use a title like that and make it fun. Of course,
considering the kinds of stories they write (or wrote) they could get
revenge by just killing me off. Over and over, if wanted.

Oh? Then you're saying that Mike's knowledge of ghostly fiction is
rather superior to yours then? I'd have to agree, you've demonstrated
that your knowledge is rather limited at best.

Not a problem, LURK AND LEARN, Chrissy, LURK AND LEARN!

Not in what I've read, but I haven't read a great deal. Far as I have
seen he didn't partake of the newer freedoms of language in the
post-WWII era.

To be painfully precise, Randy, the watershed was - in the UK anyway - in
1963 (Ah yes, I remember it well) with the Crown prosecution of Penguin Books
for publishing the officially banned Lady Chatterley's Lover.
The Establishment lost, and it was anything goes from then on. Before that,
if you printed or published or broadcast the dreaded F--- or C--- words, and
some others for all I know, you faced a heavy fine and possibly a stretch in
prison.
I cannot recall even once seeing anything stronger than a 'bloody' or
some mild blasphemy in print before '63.
Not sure what the situation was from 1950 in the USA - maybe it varied between
individual States?

Ian
It was Christmas Day in the workhouse;
The Master shouted through the halls,
"Did you enjoy your Christmas dinner?"
And the inmates shouted "...."
well I just forget the rest.

Hi, Ramsey and Ian.

If I'd thought a bit more before posting, I might not have phrased it
that way. I might even have remembered that a local (Syracuse, N.Y.)
bookstore won a major court case in the early '60s also concerning
Lawrence's LCL. That case broadened the range of material that could be
mailed in the U.S.

What I was thinking about when replying to Chris was the way writers
like Norman Mailer were pushing at the bounderies in the mid- to late
1940s. He could not use F---, but he used "fug" (as I recall) instead
and while it looks odd now, it got the job done at the time and helped
lay the foundation for later legal wars. But I really couldn't see
Aickman being interested in pushing those kinds of limitations.

Amusingly, these days in the (excellent!) TV series Battlestar
Galactica, the people use "frak" as an insult. It's a way against
draconian fines when swearing on TV.
