Post subject: Dead links
Archived from groups: rec>arts>books>tolkien, others (more info?)

I have been updating the list of interesting links on the AFT/RABT
web-site at <users.silenceisdefeat.com/~aft-rabt/links.html> (with
mirror at <http://tolkien.forchhammer.net/links.html>). In the course
of updating, I ran the links through a link-checker, and found that a
number of the links have become dead. Since, however, a number of
these pages were either constructed by members of these groups, or
were of interest to us here, I'd like to hear if anyone knows, what
has become of the pages linked to.

The dead links are:

The Newsgroup History Project
This site held the meek beginnings of the AFT/RABT Newsgroup
History project. Unfortunately Geocities has closed. Does anyone
know if someone has the original source files?

<http://teunc.wikispaces.com/>
TEUNC Wiki
I can't get a response from wikispaces -- has this been closed down
or is this a temporary problem? If closed, has TEUNC moved this
content, or is is lost?

<http://fats.wikispaces.com/>
FATS Wiki
Same as with the TEUNC wiki

<http://www.slu.edu/colleges/AS/ENG/faculty/shippey.html">
Tom Shippey at Saint Louis University
This was included in lieu of a personal homepage for Tom Shippey,
and now seems to have been taken down. Does anyone know if Shippey
now has a personal home-page?

<http://www.merp.com/essays/MichaelMartinez/>
Michael Martinez Tolkien Essays at Merp.com Website
MERP had a number of interesting articles my Michael -- does anyone
know if these can now be found at a different address?

<http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/juliet.e.mckenna/articletolkien.html>
'Tolkien, Sinner or Saint' an article by Juliet E McKenna

<http://softrat.home.mindspring.com/>
The Softrat's home-page

<http://www.daisy.freeserve.co.uk/jrrt_int.htm>
J.R.R.Tolkien Interview Jan 1971 -- Recordings and transcript of an
interview with J.R.R. Tolkien by Dennis Gerrolt, first aired in
January 1971 on BBC4
It'll be a great pity, in my honest opinio, if this interview and
the transcript have become unavailable.

All of these have been removed from the list.

In all cases, I am very interested to hear if anyone knows anything
definite about the missing pages/site -- and if something constructed
by members of these groups, if anyone has access to the source files.

The intention of the update has, of course, not just been to remove
dead links, but also to add new ones. The (very) attentive reader
will (hopefully) notice two new sections -- one for blogs with
Tolkien contents (not necessarily in every entry, but often enough to
make it worthwhile in my opinion to follow the blog) and one for on-
line fora for discussion of Tolkien matters.

Are you sure about that URL? I broke my connection with Geocities
years before it died, because they suddenly denied me the ability to
edit my own pages, but it seems odd to have an email address as part
of a URL. I tried it anyway in the Internet Wayback Machine (see
below), but found nothing.

The Internet Wayback Machine is usually the first place to start, and
in this instance it found the pages:

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://teunc.wikispaces.com/

> <http://fats.wikispaces.com/>
> FATS Wiki
> Same as with the TEUNC wiki

Nothing for this in the Wayback Machine.

I removed the extra " at end and found this in the Wayback Machine:

http://web.archive.org/web/
*/http://www.slu.edu/colleges/AS/ENG/faculty/shippey.html

> <http://www.merp.com/essays/MichaelMartinez/>

http://web.archive.org/web/
*/http://www.merp.com/essays/MichaelMartinez/

Well, you get the idea. If you have sufficient space, you might want
to recover some of these, like Shippey's article, from the Wayback
Machine and host them yourself. (The Wayback Machine requires
Javascript.) I would not advocate it for pages with living authors.

Er, yes. I know someone does. I heard an interview with a guy who
has archived much, if not all, of geocities. Now if only I could

Shippey's page at SLU is: http://www.slu.edu/x23819.xml

http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Tom_Shippey doesn't have any better

Odd - I can access that page now. Maybe it was a temporary downtime.
But I think for questions about that, Tamf is the one to contact.
Since this is the "other half" of TEUNC, I have no idea what they're
up to, but they can be best contacted via their site http://www.home.no/choklit/

Of course not. Even the Wayback machine has some standards.
No really - that can be safely deleted. Everything there of value has
been relocated to the new FATS site at http://fats.teunc.org/ .

No idea; but his personal website is at http://www.michael-martinez.com/
these days. I like it; it taught me a lot about salsa dancing.

The Softrat's home-page

You can find a space dedicated to the memory of the softrat here:

http://www.teunc.org/

From there, you can also access FATS, and don't forget to study the Fredonia
section! I find the library there particularly interesting. Other highlights
are the writings of Derridina, the touching pleas for freeing the orcs at
the Sheep of Stone, and, ahem, there is of course also the Wildschwein
section. Not to mention the link to that unsurpassed Tolkien lover, Terry
Han.
For the rest, I agree with Dr von Schneiffel that the best way to access
the softrat's own homepage (if it still exists) is to contact Tamf.

I've tried the archive at reocities.com, and the one at
oocities.org, and the one at geocities.ws, but none of them
have it.

One of the things that I was linking from Softrat's pages was his
excellent map of the Germanic languages -- detailed enough to be of
worth, but not with so many details that it became too much,
Softrat's map was better than most others that I have seen (these
others generally err in one of the other way -- either by giving too
much information to digest easily, or by giving too little
information to be really useful).

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germanic_languages>
This one gives too much information to use for quick reference (add
to that the possibility for confusion regarding the status of modern
Norwegian as a West or an East Scandinavian tongue when looking only
on the diachronic table and the list of contemporary langauges.

<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Germanictree.PNG>
This tree, on the other hand, is too simplified.

I fully support your recommendations -- www.teunc.org is certainly
worth a couple of hours of browsing.

I'll see if I can find an e-mail address for Tamf -- if possible I
think that some of the stuff from Softrat's homepage ought to be
preserved somewhere (our Silenceisdefeat site is naturally available
for this).

I can access both the wikispaces now, so I think it was a temporary
(spanning at least a full day, or possibly two temporary downtimes
hitting me -- I did try on two different days) downtime. I'll put the
links back in.

I believe Tamf can still be contacted through the old TEUNC mail group at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/teunc/

You can also find what I believe is her current e-mail address at

It's the URL given by Christopher Kreuzer in this message:
<http://groups.google.com/group/alt.fan.tolkien/msg/a397778f200473df>

One good thing that's come of this is that I finally got around to
send Christopher a mail in which I also ask him if he still has the
source files, so that I can put it on the AFT-RABT site.

<snip>

> The Internet Wayback Machine is usually the first place to start,

I admit I hadn't tried the Wayback Machine -- mainly because I wanted
to know if these sites were being continued (and updated) elsewhere
before linking to the static version in the Wayback Machine

Trying the Internet Wayback Machine for Softrat's pages, I came up
with this:
<http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://softrat.home.mindspring.com>

May I humbly suggest that TEUNC might, if copyrights can be
satisfyingly resolved, be interested in putting up Softrat's
exquisite "Who am I" and "Non-Politically Correct Page", and surely
his TEUNC pages will be interesting for TEUNC and others.

<snip>

Thanks to all who have helped with this.

I also found the Gerrolt interview (several places, actually), and I
have now updated the page again. Now the newsgroup history site is
probably the most griveous dead link, and I hope that this can be
amended.

I will add that the list of personal home pages of AFT/RABT regulars
is intended to be open to all posters who wish. I could probably have
done more to find them myself, but that's one more area where I've
been too lazy Wink

Troels -
Tamf is in charge of the Wikispaces thing, but she does not have much
to do with the Softrat's stuff. The one who has archived most of his
pages is Laurie Forbes. Since she was close to the Softrat personally
(and has been in contact with his widow; I think they even talked over
the topic of what to do with his web stuff) I believe she is the one
to contact if you plan to put it up again.

I'll let her know you asked.

If Laurie is in contact with his widow, then that is indeed the right
way to go. So far I have updated the links to point to his pages in the
Wayback Machine at Archive.org, and on sober consideration, that might
indeed be the best way to proceed (it having an appropriate 'pages from
the past' ring to it) -- possibly with some personal archiving against
the event that Arvhive.org should cease operations.

The Dead Thread Faction shall yet destroy TEUNC!

However, to paraphrase Isaac Asimov's "Foundation": "Always keep in mind
