Heres a question for you all- what do you think would have happened if
Smeagol hadn't been there when Deagol found the ring? If it never
came into Smeagols' possession?

Deagol, being unable to resist the corrupting power of the One Ring
(tm) would have shriveled into a small, raisin-like mass and been
scooped up and brought to Battle Creek, Michigan, to be tossed in the
bin with all the other ingredients of Kellogg's Raisin Bran (r)(c)(tm)
cereal.
Thus would the evil empire of the the cereal giant have grown, to the
detriment of the gentle folk fo the Malt-O-Meal lands.

....or I could just be silly.

I see two possibilities
1. Deagol will take the role of Smeagol, once he is corrupted by the ring.
2. Deagol will resist the power of the ring (much like Bilbo), but will
eventually be found by one of Saurons servants.

Scenario 1: Deagol would have become essentially another Gollum. It
might have taken a little longer, since he hadn't acquired the Ring
by murder, but he would have been thoroughly corrupted by it.

Scenario 2: Smeagol would have stolen it from Deagol while he slept,
maybe killing him or maybe just taking it secretly and silently.

Then there would have been no book, and no movies, and this newsgroup would
not exist.

Then Deagol would have become corrupted and become a kind of Golum.

I always presumed that the ring (seemingly having a will of it's own)
preferred Smeagol as a 'temporary' owner over Deagol. Perhaps Deagol would
never have been as tough and persistent in taking good care until Sauron
would come and claim it. So my guess in this matter is: suppose there wasn't
a Smeagol around, the ring would have abandoned Deagol as soon as it
encountered a more suitable candidate. Deagol would nevertheless be madly in
love with the ring (who wouldn't?) and before handing it over he might well
have to perish. So, with or without Smeagol: he's in trouble.
