Post subject: Why Was Deryni Knowledge Lost?
Archived from groups: alt>books>deryni (more info?)

Has there been any discussion on the list about the following
question:

Given the large number of Deryni rulers in the Forcinn & the rest of
the east (as we see from KKB & ITKS), why was so much esoteric
knowledge (e.g., healing, etc.) lost during the era of The Heirs of
Saint Camber?

(a) Wouldn't the major states have fostered the establishment of
healing order/scholae as a matter of national security? I can't
imagine Torenthi kings -- even when Gwynedd was held by a junior
branch of the family -- failing to promote the healing arts in
Torenth.

(b) Doesn't the high level of Deryni practice that we see in KKB in
Torenth suggest that other parts of the 11 Kingdoms retain
significantly more esoteric knowledge than we'd been led to believe by
the original Deryni trilogy? The Patriarch of Beldour says as much to
Kelson as they talk about the investiture.

(c) Even if there was significant deterioration in the level of
knowledge and practice in Gwynnedd, why is the Camberian Council
(which seems to have influence and contacts througout the Forcinn and
even into Torenth) so limited in their knowledge? Is this just an
example of the series growing beyond the original boundaries?

Thanks! It's a question that's bothered me since KKB.

Greg

The healing ability loss has been a question of mine since I started reading
the books 20 years ago. KK and the Zipper Sisters have been very quiet on
that.
