Since you have brought up log-rolling, I should mention that
FULCRUM 3 is now out and includes a poem - one of several -
that I commanded Joe to write for my beloved coz Ninka van
der Zee.

I miss the better RABfests. The RajappaFest was the last
distinguished affair.

I am heartily in favor of more women posters, for I feel (present
company excepted) that man's failing is to jump on one drum and beat
it to death (if I never read another post about Ayn Rand, George Bush,
or Gnosticism I will count myself a lucky reader). The ladies, in
addition to being pleasant to look at, also distract us from our idées
fixes.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Even ( * shudder * -- I can't believe I'm saying this. . .) Paschal.

I miss Andrew Dinn, too.

Oh, boy. We've had a few females with beaucoup des idées fixes in the
past. The aforementioned Paschal being one. What was refreshing about
hers were that she flitted from one to the next rather than "feexing"
on any one and flogging it to death for more than a week or so.

Then they were not idées fixes. I have about the same
feeling for Paschal as Sam Johnson had for Kit Smart.

Alas, we'll never hear from Boom-Boom or Maureen again.
Neither fixed; indeed I have mobile memories of both of
them. Boom-Boom I Miata'd down to Monterey where we took
in the Classical Automobile show there. I have a nice
photo of this good soul cocking a snook at a Bugatti Tipo
35. Maureen was the last person to ride pillion on my Scoot.
We ate at Palo Alto's Peking Duck which was also what we
both gobbled down.

Two others worth a mention are Joann Zimmerman and
Jane Skinner. I never crossed swords with the former
which is probable just as well since she fenced for
UT at some time; she is also one of the few RABistae
to post her visage on the Web. The latter made her
maiden flight on the same day as the Concorde and
perhaps is best remembered for her Jack Aubrey Coat
of Arms and the description thereunder at one of the
PO'B websites. Her Royal Highness has been mentioned,
I believe, but some may not have caught her Jack Lord
Fanzine or her brilliant article: * Dan Quisenberry -
In His Own Words*.

It's good to see you, so to speak. I was in CA earlier this week but
was on an errand of mercy and couldn't stop in the bay area. I did send
affectionate thoughts to you and Francis from I-5 though.

O-Furo had wondered about this little ditty:
_For his love that bought us all dear
Listen lordlings that be here
And I will tell you in fere
Whereof came the Fleur de Lys.
On Christmas night, when it was cold
Our Lady lay among beasts bold
And there she bore Jesu, Joseph told.
And thereof came the Fleur de Lys.
Mary has borne the Fleur de Lys._

I wrote:
   >>>I should be able to find it in the Carleton Brown books [....] So stay tuned,
   >>>if you don't mind.

So, I didn't find your verse, but it sounds like something
out of "Marie Mayden, Moder Mylde," a poem about the fleur-de-lys
in the Vernon MS. Formally, it's identical -- could be a missing
verse, it's that close. The diction, though, is much more
modern. Could this be a loose modern translation of the Vernon
poem (which is fairly well known)?

 >Much obliged, and there is no hurry atoll. If, in return, you would care to
 >have my superb pimento cheese receipe, do speak.

A kind offer. But I confess to having a deep-rooted horror of
pimiento cheese, founded no doubt in some early-childhood trauma.

Gee, thanks. I miss you too.

ObBook: I hadn't realized, when reading Francis' copy of Amelie
Not-at-Home's *Character of Rain*, how much of the beginning was
borrowed from Grass's *Die Blechtrommel*. I just finished teaching
the latter, though, and it was case of deferred deja vu.
