Dictionary of
City of London
Street Names
by Al Smith

Two thousand years of living, vibrant history are reflected in London’s
Street names. The City of London is the original London; its streets have
been built over a period of several thousand years and many still bear their
original names. The author’s extensive research ahs shown up little-known
squares, streets, courts, mews and alleys – each a fascinating piece in the
mosaic making up one of the great centers of world civilization. You’ll read
about Wardrobe Terrace -- in the 14th century the residence of Sir John
Beauchamp stood on this site. When he died in 1359, the house was purchased
by Edward III and became the storeroom for all the royal clothing worn on
state occasions. Cheapside takes its name from the Anglo-Saxon ceap, which
means to sell or barter. In the early 11th century, this street was the main
market of the city. And on Friday Street the fishmongers of the city hawked
their fish – mainly on Fridays – in the days when England was a Catholic
county. Illustrated with B&W photos.

Arco Publishing, New York, 1970, First edition, Ex-library, 5 ½ ” x 8 ¾”,
