Can one of you guys point me in the direction of a comparison of reliability
of digital camera brands? Please. Or give some recommendations for good
ones on the lower end of the price scale. I have looked at Kodak. It seems
to have the most for the price.

Sasha places a plate of fudge on the bar for answerers.

Thanks.

A lot of computer magazines have comparison charts, top ten, etc.,
especially with Christmas coming soon. Also, the Consumer Reports
November 2003 issue has an article on digital cameras and camcorders.

My shift partner is looking to buy his parents a digital camera so
he has most of my magazines right now so he can comparison shop.

My husband and I own the Canon G2 (which I think has been superceded by
the G3 and G5) and we are really happy with it. I think the going price
is around AUD1150. But the best camera to get at the moment is the Canon
10D which is a digital SLR (so it can use the same lenses as the 35mm
Canon cameras). It's retailing for AUD1900 at the moment. I know you
said lower end of the price range, but you didn't specify how much you
were willing to spend, and these two cameras are really good quality and
have all the features you could possibly want (including my favourite,
colour correction depending on which kind of light you're taking the
photos in). These cameras will also print out 35mm quality photos up to
A3 size.

What a coinkydink -- my dad just bought one. Not one of the all-singing
all-dancing all-bells-and-whistles models, but a nice simple no-focus
piece of kit: the Kodak CX6200. No idea what availability or price might
be like in 'Merkin-land, but it was £80 over here in PC World, with a
special offer of half price on a 128kB memory card. Over 175 high-
quality (2Mpixel) pics in one go... about 600 low-res pics... <boggle>
And it does video (no sound) as 30-second QuickTime clips. Easy to use
the controls, too. I'm really impressed. And I'm gradually teaching my
dad how to use it... =) The only thing I might wish was a bit better
is the range of the built-in flash -- under 8ft.

There you go, one happy feline customer's opinion.

Make it mouse or salmon flavoured and you've got a deal! =)

Thanks, that's a little out of our price range for now, but thank you for
the recommends. We are looking for under US$200. Enjoy the fudge, any
special kind that you are looking for?

Our favorite show on TechTV did a "theme week" about digital
cameras this week. You can find their top picks at

Leah was ugly, Joseph was abused, Moses was a murderer, Gideon was afraid, Samson had
long hair, Rahab was a prostitute, Timothy was too young, David had an illicit affair,
Elijah was suicidal, Isaiah preached naked, Job was bankrupt, John the Baptist ran around
in a loin cloth, Peter was hot-tempered, John was self-righteous.

The disciples fell asleep while praying, Martha fretted about everything, Mary Magadalene
was demon-possessed, the boy with the fish and five rolls of bread was too obscure,
the Samaritan woman was divorced more than once, Zacchaeus was too small, Paul was too religious,
and Lazarus was dead.

No more excuses!"

There's also a couple of camera docks (one just for viewing/downloading
to a PC, one that does photo printing as well) which fit any of the
Kodak Easyshare cameras and recharge the camera battery. We didn't need
either one, since the USB link is easy enough to use and I recently
bought a photo-print-capable colour printer.

We have a printer capable of printing photos. I saw the dock, but wasn't
sure if it would be worth it mainly for recharging batteries or not.

Thanks again. Have some Mouse flavored fudge this time.

<nod> That's what we thought, so I got my dad an early Xmas present -- a
set of high-capacity batteries (the camera needs two AA-size) and
plug-in recharger for about 1/5 the price of the dock.

<eyes the fudge wistfully> I think I'd better leave it for later, I
still have sticky whiskers from the last plateful.

Thanks for the fudge, Sasha! (The virtual sort is the *only* kind I
can eat, these days.) We have an Olympus Stylus 300 camera (which I've
seen online for well under $300, not including shipping). I've got
some flash and javascript slide shows with our photos at
breathingspace.home.att.net if you'd like to see some (low-resolution
versions) of the output.

Thanks. It looks like it takes nice pics. We are mostly looking for one
for snapshots of the kids. How is it in the ease of use department.

It *helps* to read the instructions, but we were taking good snapshots
right out of the box. There are different settings you can use, and
there is a remote control for group pictures. Some of the functions
(flash, focus) are automatic unless you choose to override them. I'm
pleased in the "ease of use" department.
