I figured that Jim Rockhill or one of the Rodens would have mentioned
this by now; but since no one has, I'll say that Michael Dirda's piece
on *Uncle Silas* appeared in last Sunday's *Washington Post*. It can
be read online at

Apologies for not doing this sooner. I thought I'd already seen it
mentioned, but realise now that the reference I'm thinking of was made
in a private e-mail.

In yesterday's Dirda on-line chat, we managed to get Michael talking
about how under-rated he feels Jonathan Carroll is. Work on the
principle that if he gets mentioned sufficiently often, folk might
begin to sit up and take notice of his work.

But--but--but, you said you were leaving, never to return!

Ted: Dougal! What did I tell you about NOT starting arguments?

Dougal: I dunno, Ted. What did you tell me about NOT starting
arguments?

Ted: Grr! I told you NOT to start arguments. That means, don't say
ANYTHING controversial or antagonistic.

Dougal: No problem, Ted.

Ted: OK, try again. But remember - nothing controversial or
antagonistic. Got that?

Dougal: What's all that then Ted? Controversial and antagonistic? It
sounds like something those mad fellers say in church. You know, when
they're screaming atcha, loads of nonsense abbout Hellfire and
treacle.

Ted: Look, forget the feckin' controversy and antagonism. Just be NICE
and POLITE.

Dougal: Oh, I'm widja now, Ted. Just be nice and polite.

Ted: Yes! That's it! Nice and polite.....

Dougal: So Len, tell us all about that fake signature business; you
know, when you accused Ted here of syphoning of church funds for his
summer holidays. Or what about that church of yours - tell us why the
common people aren't allowed to vote for a pope ---

Len: Don't feckin' call me Len!

TED: DOUGAL! YE FECKIN' EJIT!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
