As previously mentioned, Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Michael Dirda has
now come through with his assessment of Vernon Lee's HAUNTINGS in Sunday's
Washington Post Book World.

Dirda spent less time than usual examining overarching thematic
concerns and much more on plot summaries in this article, including a
rather long play-by-play of "Amour Dure." Generally, Dirda's good for
contextually setting the stage for the book he's reviewing, but,
despite nods to Onions, Summers, and Gilman, there's much more about
crafty Renaissance Italy and Lee's sexual repression than on how these
tales fit into the genre of the classic ghost tale. Still, he writes
rather perceptively about Lee herself, her personality, and
preoccupations.

One complaint: where is the Ash-Tree Press web address? That would
have been very helpful here for someone reading the article who may be
intrigued but who doesn't follow the small presses. They may be in
for a very frustrating Sunday afternoon with the clerk-bots at the
local Barnes & Noble store...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I don't know how usual it is for the WP to add publishers' web addresses to
reviews and commentary, but HAUNTINGS should be easy enough to track down,
even for the most pitiful clerk in the local Barnes & Noble. The book is
listed with Bowker's BOOKS IN PRINT, and is also on the Baker & Taylor
database. Even amazon.com has it listed - though you'll have to scroll
through thirty odd titles to find the right edition! (Accept no substitutes!
The Ash-Tree edition is the one you want. "Essential" - Michael Dirda.)

I just gotta say how much I admire Dirda as a vocal, prominant Aickman
fan. And you have to admire anyone who writes something like his
article "On the trouble with [bestseller] lists" from June of 2000
(which I mentioned here once before):

I hadn't seen this one before, but how true! Nice to see Michael mentioning
the much neglected Jonathan Carroll.
