Ghost-friend and booknut Michael Dirda reviewed the first volume in
the new Night Shade Press "Collected Jorkens" stories by Lord Dunsany.
Dirda wrote the review for The Weekly Standard, and it appeared in
the past week's issue (July 19). It's a brilliant piece of writing;
Dirda is one of those rare reviewers that often sends me racing out to
find the book they are talking about--as it always sounds so, well,
indispensable! Dirda's piece is a generous 4-page review with two
wonderful pictures of Dunsany.

Thanks for letting us know about this review; I knew it was scheduled to
appear soon but didn't know when. A very perceptive piece of writing.

I've already announced this on the ALL HALLOWS discussion group, but
Michael's first piece of published fiction, a ghost story, will be appearing
in the October 2004 issue of AH. His forthcoming book (BOUND TO PLEASE,
Norton, November) contains essays about several writers who have connections
to supernatural and fantasy fiction, including Vernon Lee, Avram Davidson,
Robert Aickman, Cornell Woolrich, H. P. Lovecraft, and Algernon Blackwood,
and will be reviewed in the October issue, while Michael is reviewing the
forthcoming Ash-Tree reprint of Falkner's THE NEBULY COAT, also for the
October AH. Michael calls it the 'All Dirda, All the Time' issue; I'm trying
to talk him into doing some illustrations for it as well, but no luck thus
far.

I have worried a bit about the effect of a strongly favorable review of a
book in a magazine whose circulation is literate and a large multiple of the
print-run of the book. Especially a couple of weeks after the publisher has a
clearance sale.

How would that be a bad thing? Amazon's been ordering Jorkens by the ton,
which tells me the review had some impact.

I confess to being rather confused by this concern, as well. Then again,
the whole flap over your recent sale, in Nick's journal and whatnot, has
been pretty bizarre.

Perhaps the concern is that the specialty dealers won't be able to keep it
in stock? Or that it will go op early? (Nothing new there though in the
specialty field)

I'm a little fuzzy on it as well. I tried to make it as clear as possible
that it wasn't a matter of us going out of business (we're not even remotely
in danger of that), it was just to bring in some cash so we wouldn't have to
delay a couple of books until B&T paid us (which they did do). Considering
I just returned from a 10 day trip to Michigan, where we moved the inventory
into a new warehouse, I'm much glad I did it. Every book sold was one less
we had to move!

We tend to do much larger print runs than most of the other genre presses,
so I wouldn't be too worried about it. We've still got several hundred
copies left of Jorkens vol. 1

My worry was about your having 500 copies left in stock, and faced by
orders for 5000 copies.
I know someone (Michael Walsh) who worksd as a route salesman for Johns
Hopkins Press, who loves to talk about the time that a syndicated advice
columnist mentioned a book from the JHU Press on controlling incontinence and
gave the address and price. The number of individual orders by mail a few
days later was much larger than the size of the current printing, let alone the
number of copies on hand.
Telling a bookstore that a book is backordered is one thing -- a couple
thousand orders from the wensite might be more work than you wanted.
