Discovering Abbeys and Priories
by Geoffrey N. Wright
The most familiar image of an abbey is probably that of a beautiful ruin set
in picturesque countryside, as at Rievauix or Tintern. Others may think of
it as a magnificent church, such as Selby or Tewkesbury, and yet still
others a fine country house like Newstead Abbey or Forde Abbey. Furthermore,
many cathedrals, like St. Albans and Gloucester, were once abbey churches,
and some parish churches are called priories. But what exactly is an abbey
and how does it differ from a priory? This book clarifies the seeming
confusion by answering these questions and explaining much more besides.
Wright gives information about some of the monastic communities flourishing
in Britain today and includes a gazetteer of over two hundred places where
there are monastic remains. Illustrated with B&W photos and floor plans.
