I'm lucky to have several editions of Ulysses, each fun for specific
reasons. I have:

Original edition of the Random House hardcover, the first US printing.
Penguin edition, reset in the 60s, that corrected many mistakes.
Modern library edition, handy for carrying around.
Two copies of the Gabler edition, corrected text. One is by my bed,
the other is constantly being marked in, marginal notes and
scribblings.

and...

Shakespeare & Co. 1928 printing, first edition. That I bought for $10
at a garage sale.

What editions do you have and in what way do you enjoy them? Just
asking for fun.

The oldest I've got is the 1941 reprint of the 1937 Bodley Head.

What I specialize in however, is foreign language versions. Currently
I've got Italian, French and Czech.

Plus A Portrait in French, Italian and Dutch.

Dubliners in French and Czech.

And Anna Livia Plurabelle in parallel texts, Czech and English.

I've got one or two of the books in English too.

ps I'm off to Berlin in a month or two, then Greece for the summer.

Enjoy your summer. I was hoping to make it to Dublin for the Bloomsday
centenary but our company went belly-up and I am mostly broke these
days. Sigh.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I only have one copy but there's a funny little story that goes with it.

In 1968 I was a senior in high school. I was browsing one day in one of
the big chain-bookstores in the mall and when I saw it there in the rack
a bell rang in the back of my head reminding me that one of my English
teachers had once mentioned, in passing, something about some Irish guy
named James Joyce. I picked it up.

On the way to the check-out, I also saw the hot new sensation _Soul on
Ice_ by Eldridge Cleaver. I picked it up too.

When I got to the counter, the clerk made some small talk and then when
she saw what I had she said, 'Oh, this is _very_ good'. She was pointing
at the Cleaver book.

ha ha

By the way: what I bought then, 36 years ago, was the Vintage paperback.
A note on the copyright page says "This edition, corrected and reset,
1961." The price on the cover is $2.95; I wonder what it costs today?

cheers,

Henry<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

The same Vintage press edition (1961) costs about $14 bucks now, I
think. It a very good edition and has few substantial errors, the most
significant being the "what is that one word" omission in the Library
chapter.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I have a paperback of the Hans Gabler version from 1986. My late father gave
it to me in 1991 and it's been to Ireland and back with me. It's taken a
beating all these years but I will keep it forever.

On a side note, when I was in Dublin I hiked from my hotel room near the
Cabman's Shelter down along the coast to Killiney, past the Martello tower in
Sandycove. Made me realize just how difficult it would have been for Stephen
to have walked it, if he had entertained the idea after the Nighttown
chapter.

Bloom - " Walking to Sandycove is out of the question. And even

supposing you did you won't get in after what occurred at Westland Row

station. Simply fag out there for nothing. "

Greetings.
I just happened to be looking through the various books groups and found
this one. I love Joyce and have spent years reading his works.. .never tire
of it and always find more to enjoy.

I own two editions:

First Vintage Books Edition, 1986 (paperback)
and,
A beautiful boxed edition by NYBC last copyright of 1961. This was a gift
from my wife and features illustrations by Susan Stillman.

Regards,
