Hey, all!

I'm here asking opinions of my fellow Deryni Fans. I've decided to bring a
DeryniMUSH option to the newsgroup as often as I can. As the MUSH God (aka,
controlling admin) of DeryniMUSH, I have it within my power to set various
options. One of these is: coinage.

As we all know, there is no (to my memory) mention in the stories of the
names of any coins of the Eleven Kingdoms. So, I've been stewing on this
issue for a few weeks: what do I call them? Each time your character logs on
the MUSH, you receive a payment of coinage. They can be used for various
things. Right now, the default name is 'pennies'. This is a Medieval Term.
Here's the definition:

MONEY: The common currency in England in the late middle ages and until
decimalization in 1971 was the Pound consisting of a pound of silver which
was divided into 20 shillings (20s.) or 240 pence (240d.). One penny equaled
two half-pence or four farthings. Thus, for example, £1 11s. 6d. was the
equivalent in decimal terms of £1.575.

Of course, I am looking for a name that best evokes the period, so "Pound"
would be a last resort.

So, my question: Please post here telling me what you believe the common
coinage of the western realms of the Eleven Kingdoms was called, why it was
called that, and how you would dilineate the coins. For example:

common coin: pence
farthing, pence, shilling...etc
Cause that's how it was in real life
Smile

So, here's your chance to make a difference on DeryniMUSH. Help me choose
what coinage the King's Grace pays his troops with! Smile

Geoffrey, the only mention of coinage I remember in the books was in
the short story The Knighting of Derry in which the price of horses is
discussed as "250 gold marks."

The penny (Denarius) actually goes back to King Offa in the 8th
Century.

The silver "groat" (4 pence) has a nice mediaeval ring to it (though
it wasn't introduced until 1279)

the "florin" (6 shillings) didn't catch on (though the name continued:
when I was young, in pre-decimal days, a 2-shilling coin was still
called a florin)

instead, there was the "noble" (worth 6s 8d, or half a mark -
one-third of a Pound) and the "mark" (13s 8d)

then Edward IV introduced gold coins - the "ryal" or "rose noble"
worth 10 shillings, and the "angel" worth 6s 8d

(Benedick, in _Much Ado about Nothing_, when listing his requirements
for a wife comments "rich she shall be, that's certain; wise, or I'll
none; fair, or I'll never look on her; mild, or come not near me;
noble, or not I for an angel...")

the "crown" (initially 4s 6d, but later 5s) was introduced in 1526:
half-crowns (2s 6d) were in use until decimalisation.

Of course, the florin (Dutch), mark (German) and crown (Kroner,
Scandinavia) are more commonly associated with other European
currencies.

They were coins, but I don't think they could be used as currency. They
were more as a commemorative "So and so took vows at this abbey on
this date" kinds of things.

Yes, I remember that story. I still puzzle over the use of 'marks' and why
not some other, more appropriate coinage such as John Pritchard lists above?

There are many such details that are missing or glossed-over in the stories.
I've always wondered why.
Too bad I work on Sundays or I'd pop into the KK CHAT and just ask Smile

So, you recommend I use 'marks'?

thanks

The Mark was probably the most-used currency unit in the Middle Ages,
and seems to be the most suitable choice. However, it's far too large
a value to be convenient for things like paying soldiers or tavern
bills, and a smaller unit would be needed as well. I do like the idea
of using groats, which would be a more reasonable working unit (40
groats equalling one mark).

(The pound would certainly be wrong: it wasn't actually in use as a
coin until 1489, though the concept existed earlier - 240 silver
pennies weighed one pound. There was a pound coin in Elizabethan
times, but James I replaced it with a "unite", and in the C18 the
standard coin was a gold guinea, equal to 21s. The pound, or gold
sovereign, equal to 20s or 240d, did not become the standard coin in
normal use until 1817. )

Someone commented that a horse is said to have cost "250 gold marks",
which was a lot of money. A labourer's pay in mediaeval times might
have been 4 pence a day (one groat). Around 1600 a craftsman might be
paid 14 -18 pence a day, and a labourer 8 pence a day; a man's food
and drink provided by his employer was reckoned to be worth about 4d a
day.

If your players are going to pay for those sorts of costs, even a
groat might be too large a unit - or you may have to allow pennies and
farthings as well.

How about this, then:

farthing, pence, groat and mark?

I could have the MUSH payout farthings instead of pennies.

Sound good?

Well, if you want to go with the "official" coinage (which my team
worked out with Katherine), here it is:

Coins in the Eleven Kingdoms

Gold:
Sovereign = 4 Marks
Half-Sovereign = 2 Marks
Mark = 4 Royals

Silver:
Royal = 8 Pennies
Vice-Royal = 4 Pennies
Penny = 4 Farthings

Copper:
Farthing (1/4 Penny)

There's more info (about where the mines are, etc.) in the Deryni
Adventure Game (due out this summer) and the Atlas (due out next year)
but the above was easy to find and copy and paste. Smile

Greets, Irene
DeryniMUSH is an online, virtual role-playing world based on the most
excellent
series by Katherine Kurtz. We base our storytelling at the beginning of the
Deryni
Chronicles: Deryni Rising.

Our MUSH is a theatrical role-playing environment with skills, magick and
combat
supported with the FUDGE rules. We'll be installing all the DeryniFUDGE
rules as
soon as is possible.

In order to connect you'll need the following program:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.gammon.com.au/mushclient/mushclient.htm" target="_blank">http://www.gammon.com.au/mushclient/mushclient.htm</a>

It's similar to a mIRC chat room in 'command syntax', but we're able to
describe
the Eleven Kingdoms and simulate 'living' there, all in text.

Please feel free to log on. Using mushclient, log in at this address:
deryni.korongil.net port # 1120
If you need an explanation on how to do so, please feel free to let me know.

thanks
MGH

I installed and connected. Is there a sheet somewhere that says what the
commands are and how to create characters and play? Or is this game still in
the creation stage?
You can email me offlist if you don't want to tie up the list with my newbie
game questions Smile

Thanks again,
Irene

Greets, Irene

I sent you an email explaining how to get past the connection screen.
Basically, once you see the screen with the celtic knotwork border and large
banner, just type, create <character name> <password> then press the enter
key. So, for example:

create <Irene> <usu847k>
hit the enter key

voila!
You are logged in as character named Irene. A bunch of info scrolls by,
welcoming you and explaining a couple of things. Once you are on, type +who
to see who is connected, +beginner to get some help on how to get started
and, +new <message> to speak on the Newbie chat channel. When I say type
<whatever>, it means, just like a mIRC chat session, you must pess the enter
key after typing. Perhaps this is obvious, but when training new
team-members at work, I notice they keep asking me: so, I hit the enter key?
So, I figure it's best to be clear and specifically state that.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing you on the MUSH.

MGH
