Can any Asimov fans tell me the title of the essay (and book/s) that
Isaac wrote about this well known story ?

I think that it's in one of my Asimov books, but after storage for
about 20 years, I cannot find it! ...I might have lost it or loaned it
out, or even borrowed the book from the library way back then.

I remember it so clearly and have recently had reason to recount the
tale, I would like to read it again!

Many thanks,

Steve.

PS

I know that the tale is debatable and that various other versions can
be found on the internet!

Are you sure it's Asimov? He might have mentioned it, but I don't
remember an essay devoted to the story. Incidentally, I assume you're
talking about the rice grains arranged in a geometric series on the
64 squares; if not, please describe the story.

It does form the introduction to a Sagan essay in his book, Billions
and Billions.

Thanks for that Brian.

Yes, you are thinking of the same story as me.

I'm pretty certain that it was in one of Asimov's books but, as you
say, he might have just mentioned it as an example of geometric
progression in one of his essays.

Oh well maybe it was Sagan. I didn't read that many of his books and
"Billions and Billions" does not ring any bells.

Thanks again,

Carl Sagan, AKA TBA="The Butthead Astronomer"?

I think it is rather unfair to remember Carl Sagan only for that episode.
And I think the acronym was BHA, actually, but TBA might be right.

I remember Sagan for all that he did in popularizing science, just as that
is what I mostly remember Asimov for, too. (Even in his fiction.)

Actually, -Two- were refered to.

Might have been. The person I got the story from initially said "TBA".

I remember him for his "If it's not science -I- know about it's religion
and therefore evil" attitude. Asimov was a little more respectful of
other's beliefs -and- open minded about science.
