No real spoilers, but I have to point out something that
Cat Hank said to Ape Hank:

"Jean fell fighting Magneto. He caused an electrical surge
in her brain. She died in Scott's arms of a massive stroke."

Does that suggest that the retcon is being retconned?

Which retcon would that be?

No.

More than likely Hank just didn't want to tell Dark Beast the truth.
Hank also doesn't mention anything about the last time Jean was seen
(that is, during PHOENIX: ENDSONG).

Hank says Magneto, not the retconned Xorn-pretending-to-be-Magneto.

Well, if you had to give a quick rundown of what had happened, wouldn't
it be easier to just say "Magneto" instead of the full explanation,
which is really quite messy?

Also, why didn't the Dark Beat ask about Nathan Dayspring Askani Cable
Grand Poobah Summers? Maybe they wanted to be flexible with where these
events take place in relation to X-Men #200?

That seems unlikely given that this storyline actually kicked off in
X-Men #200.

That said, I would think Rachel would bear mentioning as well...and,
even if Cable is dead, the whole point of that exchange was that they
tend not to stay that way so he should have come up...and there's also
Stryfe to consider...my God, that Summer/Grey line has gotten
complicated over the years.

He has no reason not to tell Dark Beast the truth. It seems more
like something the writer didn't know, and just wasn't checked.
Beast could have as easily have said "Xorn" instead of "Magneto".

No room, I'd guess.

So far, Endangered Species isn't really a story though. It is more
like Marvel Encyclopedia entries, linked and presented in story form.

First we get a run down of Decimation, and why it is important.
Various details are set down in one book, rather than delivered as
hints and statements across the entire line.

Next, we get a refresher of Marvel villains and geneticist powers.
This also displays bits of their personalities in how they reject
Beast.

Then we get a course on Wundagore.

I missed X-Factor, so I don't know what happens there. I'm guessing
it involves Dr. Rao though, as part 5 starts with him mentioning her
research and Breakworld (from Astonishing's slow running arcs.)

Next comes a rundown of Neverland, and what happened there.

The following chapter tells who and what Dark Beast is, for those
who didn't read Age of Apocalypse.

I did read the next X-Factor back-up, which gives more details on
Age of Apocalypse. Also, it describes the death of Jean (but says
Magneto killed her, not the retcon of Xorn) and the dissolution of
Nate Grey. (Since Dark Beast made a follow-up comment about Nate,
that might play a part in a future chapter.)

Storywise though, not much has happened. Beast asked people to
help. People turned him down. He tried to find one person. He gets
help from another, but it doesn't actually help. He agrees to work
with Dark Beast, and gets double-crossed.

Cut all the recaps of related prior events, and you could probably
fit the first seven chapters into seven pages. Which also fits in
how each new chapter tends to recap the previous chapter in around
one panel. Or take the team-up with Dark Beast for an example.
While the chapter revolves around Beast changing his mind about
working with Dark Beast, it is also the first chapter to reveal
that Beast had objection to working with Dark Beast in the first
place. Miss the chapter, and you don't really miss anything.

If anything, I would say "Jean fell fighting Xorn..." If it wasn't
actually Magneto who killed her why make it appear that it was...

"A Magneto imposter" isn't really that messy.

Xorneto was an editorial mistake. Besides, I get the feeling Mike Carey
knows his stuff. Maybe it wasn't a mistake on his part.

Oh geez...I forgot all about that wonderful piece of storytelling.

Maybe so...or maybe he skipped the Chuck Austen retcon along with me.
I agree that the Xorneto bit was lame...the problem is that Marvel has
never been consistent in their characterization of Magneto and, as a
result, it seems like half his appearances get retconned as imposters.

While I'm not going to disagree, he has no reason to tell Dark Beast
the truth, either. And we know that Hank knows what he told Dark Beast
isn't true.
