I recently purchased a 3 copy set of the Lord of the Rings at a local
bookstore. These were editions printed in 2004, cover art done by
John Jude Palencar. They were not an expensive purchase, and I bought
them merely to have a fairly nice copy to read. However, when I got
to the chapter "The Taming of Smeagol", I noticed an oddity. Pages
753-781 were missing. Not torn out, just missing from the book. My
questions, therefore, are 1) was there any news about that edition
having those errors? 2) Does that type of error in a book help
increase its value? and 3) How can I go about finding information
about how to value it and where to sell it? I would appreciate any
help in this matter. Thanks!

Just a missing signature.
Probably would detract, rather than add, value to the book.

Alas, such manufacturing errors in books are merely annoying, rather than
enriching. The error is probably specific to your copy of the book, rather
than running through the entire print job. Books are printed with many pages
on a single sheet, which can then be folded and trimmed into a "signature"
of consecutive pages. You can often see these signatures in a hard-cover
book just be looking at the top or bottom page edges near the spine. You
will see the fold next to the spine. Probably all that happened with your
book is that one of the signatures got left out. You could probably return
it to the store for a complete copy, but that's about all the value you
would get from it.

There's no added value.

Perhaps, IF this error had occurred in the first printing of the
first edition of the first book, it would serve as an identifying
marker for something that hadn't printed in the tens of millions.

But an error in an easy-to-get, first printing in the millions,
subsequent book in the series, isn't going to add value.
I'm sure the bookstore will be happy to exchange for a complete
copy, if you ask and have your receipt proving you purchased
it there.
