Although 114 years may seem like a long time, it's not a lot
in the book world. An "old" book to a collector would have
been published in the 1500 or 1600s. A collectible book is
one that's uncommon in its state.
Your book is a reprint, published 46 years after the original
publication. So by the time yours was published, there
were already (who knows how) many copies existant.

You can research at
http://www.addall.com/used/ to see what
booksellers are asking for this book (in the same condition, by the
same publisher, with the same date).
You can also Google for a biography or check Wikipedia.org,
both of which will turn up information on a *noted* author's
books.
I think you should enjoy your little book. If you have children
let them read it. It's a charming story, and you can play
"Evangeline" by Aaron Neville for them (which will help them
understand both the song and the story).
