SPOILERS, of course...
Nice issue! Actually allowed Claremont to indulge in his love of
dreamscapes and surreality without being too confusing or carried away.
Couple of things:
*I'm glad that it's clear that this is Xavier's mind "recasting" his
past, because Logan gets around FAR too much. Glad to see that this
isn't really a retcon...or IS it?...
*Took me awhile to recognize "Carmen"...Has this been previously
stated? ISTR him being an old friend, but maybe I'm thinking of Jean
Grey's father...
*Is that meant to be Wanda coming onto Xavier on the beach?
*Does anyone really believe that that's really Dormammu? If so, then
Charley's in for one hell of a headache...^^
*Ah, so the mystery of the Schubert-loving doctor is revealed! Maybe...
Actually, I can buy that.
*REALLY surprised that Legion didn't show up (where is he now?), but
the scene with Gaby made up for it. Nice nod to Morrison's storyline,
too...
Dex,
who actually liked the Apocalypse Now riff...^^ >> Stay informed about: Excalibur #14 |

Agreed. This was a fantastic issue. Definitely the best Claremont in
recent memory, and possible one of the best X-Books of recent memory
(imo).

Yeah, it was kind of ambiguous as to which memories were real and which
weren't. Personally, I'm betting that it was all recast.
> *Took me awhile to recognize "Carmen"...Has this been previously
> stated? ISTR him being an old friend, but maybe I'm thinking of Jean
> Grey's father...
Nope. It's either a retcon (which I hope it isn't) or more of that
"recasting" of the past.
Other recasts:
* Nick Fury as the general
* Scott Summers as the CIA representative
Much of what Xavier says leads me to think that all of these people are
recasted memories. It's either Xavier seeing parallels of his past and
present, or Wanda/Magneto (or the "big bad" behind the scenes)
manipulating things. Strange says some thing to make me believe the
latter.
Strange: "Because yours is the viewpoint psyche, you define the
setting. Magneto, being the object, defines much of the journey...
Wanda, as you've just seen [referring to the girl dressed in red on the
beach], is the wild card."
Xavier: "But why set the scenario at this particular point in my life?"
Strange: "From here, because of that fateful letter from Moira, you
wander... you meet Magneto."
Then later, we meet Fury/the general and Scott/CIA agent, who lay the
plans to kill Magneto and Wanda. Xavier's probably finding parallels
between the present, impending HOUSE OF M and a war mission in the
past. Plus, as before, "Magneto defines the journey."
Xavier: "Why do you think this scenario's set in my war?"
Strange: "For [Magneto], this may be akin to trying to alter the course
of the Mississippi."
So, Strange seems to think that Magneto is altering Xavier's memories
to bring Xavier to kill them both (put them both out of everyone's
misery).
This conclusion is supported later, when Xavier (in his dreamscape)
confronts Magneto with the M-16. Magneto disassembles it, then
reassembles it so Xavier can blow him away.
One of the problems I see with Carmen serving with Xavier in what seems
to be Vietnam is that it seems like too long a stretch of time. Carmen
leaves after that tour of duty, yet waits 15 or so years to have a
child with Theresa? Of course, it's never specifically stated to be
Vietnam, so who knows where or when this is.
> *Is that meant to be Wanda coming onto Xavier on the beach?
Yes. As Stephen Strange says, she's hiding in the places of Xavier's
mind that he's scared to enter.
> *Does anyone really believe that that's really Dormammu? If so, then
> Charley's in for one hell of a headache...^^
It definitely seems to be the real Dormammu. In the narration, it says
that Wanda or some other being bought him there. He also certainly
seemed pissed about being there. I suspect that this is some sort of
tease as to who is really behind HOUSE OF M (hint: it's not all of
Wanda's or Our Lord Magneto's doing). If so, then I suspect that we
don't see the outcome of Strange's battle with Dormammu so as to not
give away too much of the plot of HOUSE OF M.
Also, when Xavier is talking with Gabrielle Haller, she definitely lays
hints that he's not dreaming this stuff up, but he's actually talking
to her telepathically.
> *Ah, so the mystery of the Schubert-loving doctor is revealed! Maybe...
> Actually, I can buy that.
Very interesting... wonder what Moira and her "thesis instructor" were
doing...
> *REALLY surprised that Legion didn't show up (where is he now?), but

Yup. That scene in the "Black Bug Room" definitely seemed inspired by
Morrison. Very nicely done, too. >> Stay informed about: Excalibur #14 |

Uh, I'm pretty sure the mission Xavier's sent on wasn't meant to be one he
actually went on, since it's an obvious satire of Apocalypse now.

Xavier had never met Carmen Pryde (that's who I'm guessing you're
talking about since he died in Genosha) until he tried to recruit Kitty.
I also think his original association with John Grey came when he began
to help Jean control her powers. >> Stay informed about: Excalibur #14 |

It was the mission on which he was actually sent. Xavier even explains
that everyone died in the mission, except for him (he was injured and
got his ticket home). >> Stay informed about: Excalibur #14 |

The war in question was definitely not in the Middle East (not many
jungles in the Middle East). You seem to be confusing two separate wars
that Xavier was involved in. >> Stay informed about: Excalibur #14 |

Claremont says that Marvel has slid Xavier's war from Korea to Vietnam, now
to some random Middle Eastern skirmish. Which is how he met Tessa.
As has been established, this was a very surreal and reality-recasting
dream. What is depicted in the art, is obviously not necessarily what
happened. At least that's the quickest route to win a no-prize. >> Stay informed about: Excalibur #14 |

Its amazing how much better CC is when he just tries to tell a story with
the main cast instead of people with squid arms and the indistinguishable
new "kids with powers" he's not very good in creating.

Exactly, and this is NOT the war in question. This war supposedly
happened before he got crippled or met Tessa.
According to EXCALIBUR #14:
* Xavier in a war (set in some jungle).
* He gets a Dear John letter from Moira.
* He, therefore, signs on for another tour of duty.
* However, he gets slightly injured (enough to send him home, but not
permanently crippling).
* Xavier then travels Europe and the Middle East, eventually meeting
Magneto and Gabrielle Haller.
* He's then involved in ANOTHER war located in the Pakistan/Afghanistan
region, during which he meets Lucifer, gets severely injured, meets
Sage, and never makes it back to Gaby.
* Gaby, then, falls in love with someone else and raises Legion. >> Stay informed about: Excalibur #14 |

There's no second war, just an uprising that he leads in one village against
Lucifer when his legs get broken. The war depicted in Excalibur #14 was
originally the Korean War, it's shortly after Cain Marko finds the Crimson
Ruby that he receives the letter from Moira. And the village where he met
Lucifer was never shown to be in Pakistan, it was orginally in Tibet, then
moved to Afghanistan for no reason a few years ago.
