Up for auction is Flora's Lexicon: An Interpretation of the Language and
Sentiment of Flowers, with an Outline of Botany, and a Poetical Introduction
by Catherine H. Waterman from 1857 & published by Phillips, Sampson, &
Company from Boston. "This popular language of flower book was first
published in Philadelphia in 1839 with hand-colored lithographs, and was
reprinted numerous times thereafter. The book gives the botanical
classification, sentiment and poetry for each of the 220 flowers included;
it is arranged alphabetically by flower. " The book measures 5" x 7.75", has
black embossed hardcovers with ornate gilt lettering on the covers/spine,
has gilt edges all around, has 4 color plates, & is has 252 total pages. In
addition, the book has an inscription dated 1860 on the 1st interior blank
page. The book is a decent copy in good (G) condition with some wear to the
cover edges/corners, wear/chipping to the bottom spine corner, loss of some
of the cover gilt, a couple blocks of pages that are still attached but a
little loose towards the back of the book, age spotting/discoloration to the
margins of multiple interior pages, loss of gilt to the outside edges in
places, etc.
