It is a Great Read and while I'm not sure where Raymond could go next with
the Faerie, I wish he would write more about the Magi.

Magi? I read Faerie Tale a couple of years ago, but I don't remember
the Magi. Are they in fact from Faerie Tale? Or from another work?

Thanks. I believe I remeber it vaguely now. Came in as government
types or something? Like I said, i can't really remember. Think I'll
have to re-read the book -- not a problem as it was a really good
story...

The Magi were the human Enemy of the Faerie and are the people who purchased
the house at the end of Faerie Tale. They definitely have powers of magic
and work to hide the existence of the Faerie as well as themselves.

Hmm. Well, if you do look back at the creatures of Faerie, you'll
notice that in their actions they almost don't have a "free will" --
they seem to be almost incarnations of forces of nature and live out an
almost scripted existence focused on completeing their Rightful Task as
it were. My example for this would be the pan-like creature who
initially seemed to be helpful, but as the seasons passed, became more
and more like the Horned One he hated until he in fact became that
entity. Just as one season passes to the next and the year becomes
bitter, cold and then dies giving way to the New Year.

If, as I posit above, the creatures of Faerie are but representations
of Nature herself, I think it would be hard to pull some sort of story
arc out of them for the Magi to oppose; what the Magi do now seems to
be more along the lines of keeping the human world and the Faerie World
from bumping into each other -- not really exciting unless there are
some complications as those that were experienced by our hero in
_Faerie Tale_. The Faerie creatures themselves seem to be
self-limiting as they exist only to fulfill their roles.

This is not to say that there aren't more nefarious agents of magic for
the Magi to oppose, however. They really could have some interesting
adventures if their duties were expanded to more of a "World's Magic
Police" role instead of riding herd on an essentially limited-dimension
type of Magical creature -- even though those creatures may in fact
hold the key to the progression of time and everything in our world
(they are it's avatars?). They really do have some potential for
interesting exploits, and I'd welcome these magical contentions to a
modern setting as well -- simply for the "change of scenery".

you, they were shown as basically good people.

Back then I had an idea for an "End of Days" type story called The Demon
Project, and it was an "indirect" Faerie Tale sequel, with a cameo of
the twins, now college students, and featuring Mark Blackman as the only
significant character in both books. Other things, such as my
publishers wanting more heroic fantasy, prevented it. I may still do
it, someday, but I've got another six or seven books to go to finish the
complete Riftwar Cycle.

Best, R.E.F.

Ray, I hate it when you say that ! Only six or seven more .....

How are those other projects coming along ? The possible SF one ? The
adventure one ? The how to pick up good looking young women one ? OK so we
can cut number 2 !

Right now everything depends on my next contract. My last book under
the current one is Wrath of a Mad God, the final volume in the Darkwar
Saga. Much of what will happen next is a function of the business and
what the publisher(s) desire. I suspect we'll target the next two
riftwars, and perhaps a stand-alone or two, but in the main none of the
things I've talked about over the years will happen until I finish the
entire Riftwar Cycle.

I was having lunch a couple of days ago with some of my production
partners, and my old friend Steve from college and I said, "Could you
even imagine back in the day that I'd have written maybe thirty novels
about Midkemia when the dust settled?" He just shook his head and
laughed.

Anyway, I should have a much better idea of what the future holds in
about six months.

Best, R.E.F.

Well then, good luck with it all; especially the publishers. You're
about the *only* author whose work I still anticipate. You still spin
one hell of a yarn.

GRRM has gotten too gritty for me -- I don't care to read graphic
accounts of children's heads smashed against walls, about rape (yes, I
know, but does it have to be so *graphic*?), and I really never want to
see the word c*nt in writing again after his rather prolific use of it.

Jordan? Yeah, what the heck happened there?

You're a rock, dude. Keep 'em coming.

....Ok. So Rowling's a guilty pleasure and Heinlein's written all he's
going to.

Well, I never publicly comment on another writer, but I will say George
has written some stuff I really admire, like Feaver Dream and Armageddon
Rag. But that's why they make more than one flavor of ice cream, right?

A lot of things. Right now Jim Rigney (Jordan) has a major health issue
which is much more on my mind than finishing the series. He is working
on the last book and with luck it will be out on time. Other than that,
I'm just hoping Jim pulls a rabbit out of the hat and beats this thing.

It's quite understandable you not commenting on other authors. I'm
just saying (poorly, I guess) that I really enjoyed his books at the
begining of the series, but they've gotten almost a little too harsh
for me. I've never read any other works by him, so it might be time I
did. He really is a good writer, but I think he has gotten a little
carried away in some aspects of his story telling.

I had no idea. There have been rumors floating around for *years*
about his possible illness or even death. This is the first I've heard
from someone who could actually confirm or deny this. That and that he
is actually working on the last book of the series. Good luck to him
with both.
