Archived from groups: rec>collecting>books (more info?)

I have a copy of Fail-Safe by Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler,
published by McGraw Hill, 1962. McBride's says MaGraw should have a
first edition statement, but there is none on my copy, only Copyright
1962. There is a "Book of the Month Club Selection" statement on the
dj but the $4.95 original price is also present. There is a number
code on the lower corner of the DJ, 08927. The same number is
imprinted on the lower rear corner of the book. So, is this a 1st, an
exception to the rule? Any help is much appreciated. Bob

I don't know how far this will get you. I have a copy (without dust jacket)
which states "seventh printing" on the copyright page. It also has the number
you mention on the lower rear corner of the book. I have generally thought of
it as a book club edition because of those numbers. It may be that the
publisher did not change anything except adding a number stamp when it
differentiated regular editions from book club editions.

Francis,
I never did find out for sure. I listed and sold this book on ebay
with the caveat in the description that I wasn't sure of edition. It
didn't sell for much, a disappointment for me. It was inscribed by
"Bud" (I assume this was Eugene Burdick) to "Bill", who I know to be
William Lederer, Burdick's co-author of The Ugly American. So I
thought it would go for more. Oh well.
Thanks for your response,
Bob
