Post subject: FA: Fantasy & Science Fiction, November 1981 (Asimov/Brunner/King/Niven/etc)
Archived from groups: alt>books>isaac-asimov (more info?)

A brief look at recent postings on this group leads me to believe this
post won't be inappropriate. Please let me know if it's not
acceptable and I'll refrain from posting auction notices in future.

This is likely to be of interest to collectors of a variety of SciFi
authors, including Larry Niven, Isaac Asimov or John Brunner, as well
as Stephen King.

Magazine: Fantasy & Science Fiction, November 1981

Description: This is something of an oddity for me, but it may be of
interest to someone out there.

This is the November 1981 issue of Fantasy and Science Fiction
magazine. I noticed it because it contains the very first publication
of the fifth part of Steven King's "The Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger"
story, "The Gunslinger and the Dark Man".

A more complete contents is as follows (obviously this is the first
time any of these appeared anywhere ... you can't get more "first
edition" than this):

Novelettes
The Man Who Saw the Thousand-Year Reich -John Brunner
Talisman - Larry Niven and Dian Girard

Short Stories
Casey's Empire - Nancy Kress
The Gunslinger and the Dark Man - Stephen King
Plenty of Nothing - Michael D Taylor
Quill Tripstickler Out the Window - John Shirley
Sanasardo Meets Attila - Alan Ryan
Treading the Maze - Lisa Tuttle

Essays/Articles
Science: The Crucial Asymmetry - Isaac Asimov

One other feature which might interest LoTR fans is a full-page advert
by "Tolkien Enterprises" in California marking the Silver anniversary
of "The Lord of the Rings", offering membership of "The Fellowship".
This seems to have comprised an official membership certificate, two
posters, a bumper sticker, button badges etc. I don't expect these
will still be available but you could always write off and ask!

Condition: Fairly good, considering this is an extremely flimsy
magazine, this copy has survived very well. There is some rubbing on
the covers, and the pages are rather yellowed, but other than that
it's in good shape.
