People,
Since it is awfully silent out here, i thought the time has come for a
message.
First a happy newyear too you all.
Now then,
Who would you say are your favorite characters in mr. Feists books?
1. Mara of the Acoma
a very strong woman who demands great respect.
2. Prince Arutha
just good
3. Pug
can't picture Midkemia without him.
4. Hokanu of the Shinzawai.
you can see i am a fan of Kelewan.
greetings,
Jacco Weel

And thusly dids't "Jacco Weel" <jacco.weel RemoveThis @quicknet.nl> speak, to
which I responded as so...

Eric Von Darkmoor.
Although, having recently (relatively speaking) read Flight of the
Nighthawks, I think I may go back to Magician and go through the
series again, after which, I may have a new favourite.
Although, that'll only happen if I can stop myself from buying brand
new books. I brought a Keith Laumer book today, and got the entire
Belisarius series by Eric Flint & David Drake in electronic format
when I signed up to get the BaensUniverse online SF magazine, so it
may be a while yet before I'm looking for something to read.

I'll have to go over to my brothers place and grovel and beg and plead
for a loan of the Empire series - it's been far too long since I read
that - it badly needs re-reading, I reckon. Dammit - I could've got
away without begging 'n stuff, I was at his place last week and we did
another of our "Great Reading Material Swaps(tm)".
Anyone here into Peter F Hamilton ? I reckon it's brilliant SF and it's
BIG...

Me too...

Yep Nakor has my vote too with Bobby de Loungville coming second. Erik,
Roo, Jadow, Gathis and Sho Pi all figure in there too. Hell, they ALL
figure in there...
The things I really like about Nakor are his INSATIABLE thirst for
knowledge and that he seems to treat everything as a source of
amusement put on especially for him. I think Bobby is a caring brute of
a man - if you can have such a thing... I'd always want him on my
side.

There's a bit about him in Rage of a Demon King but I reckon you need
to read the Empire series. Read Magician and then the Empire series and
you'll get a pretty good feel for Pugs rise to power, I think... His
"Temper Tantrum" is a .....erm well, let's say I'm bloody glad I wasn't
there...

It's probably not the most popular choice, but I quite like Roo Avery as a
character - a hard road to respectability well travelled. Arutha I (to
distinguish him from his namesake of later stories, Jimmy The Hand's son)
exemplifies the ideals of nobility. Mara for her resourcefulness and quick
wit. Jimmy himself, especially once he became Lord James. And lastly Black
Guy (another choice that will probably surprise people); the sense of
personal honour at any cost. I would love to read a story set in Rillanon
after Guy's repatriation at some point - a murderous tale of political
infighting that would contrast nicely with those aspects of the Empire
trilogy, I think. Oh, and one more: Kasumi was another character I greatly
enjoyed, especially his interactions with Pug and Laurie.

I'm afraid that I found that sequence to be the weakest in Magician. I kept
waiting for him to do something impressive.... maybe I'm jaded, but for a
mage with all the power of two worlds, it simply wasn't cosmic enough to
really awe me. It didn't really come to life until retold in the second
volume of the Empire series. But thart's OK, I'm sure I have favorite scenes
that you would disagree with (something you are fully entitled to do,) and
its the differences in tastes that make life interesting.

Yes, I love it... only problem, though, is that since I am 'advancing in
years', I find that by the time the next one comes out I have forgotten
a lot of the significant detail of the last one. So, I will have to
re-read 'Pandora's Planet' before I can read the next one which I
received on Xmas morning.
But I have got some Feist to read first! Thank God for Raymond, what
would we do without him!

Should have shut up and been thought a fool, having since read about Bek...
Nakor... I decided the best course of action with FotN was to force myself
to put it down now and then, read it over a few days. Not an easy task. <g>
75% Read. I'll finish it today, I can feel it's pull all the way from the

P.S. You can tell how much I concentrate on Ray's books by the simple fact
that I've seen two type-setting mistakes so far. One was 'Talnoy' spelt as
'Talony', can't remember the other one. Most people skip over words that
they're familiar with and don't notice spelling mistakes, it's just the way
most people's brains work. Maybe I should get a job as a Proof-reader? >> Stay informed about: Favorite characters |

I could never get into that, and I'm not sure why. I love Ray's solo books,
I (mostly) enjoyed Janny's solo books, but together it just didn't do it for
me. Like I love strawberry ice cream and I love sweet & sour pork, but I
wouldn't mix them on the same plate!

Yeah. I don't understand the logic of that. It's one big global marketplace
now and this type of staggered release just encourages those who have the
means (Credit card, internet access) to shop elsewhere. I know of a lot of
people who buy DVDs and books via the internet if they've been released
somewhere else. I know of quite a few people who bought FotN from Amazon UK
months ago. All this practice is doing is depriving US retailers of sales
and profits. Maybe not a significant percentage yet but it'll be going up
and up month by month.
If I had a credit card a New Zealand retailer would have missed out on the
profit from the sale of FotN and I dare say I would have got it more
cheaply.
The sooner businesses realise the global nature of the modern market the
sooner they'll profit from it, or at least not hurt parts of their
distribution chain. If I was a US bookstore owner I would have looked into
getting FotN wholesale from the UK. If I was a US bookstore *chain* owner
with a bit of purchasing leverage I would be putting pressure on the
publisher to cease this practice. I mean, Ray's a popular author. My local
bookstore has FotN in pride of place in the new releases section, *six*
books facing out in a square on the shelf, hard to miss. (NZ$39.95 a copy)
No other books currently enjoy as high a profile. The local library has it
as a "Hot Pick" meaning it's not free to borrow, it's $4 for two weeks and
it's on display right by the counter. I've never seen that with a Fantasy
release before, they usually only do that with mainstream 'bestsellers', the
sort of book I avoid like the plague.
Ho hum.

Yeah, Borric *was* cool. There is (AFAICR) not much mention of the Duchy of
Crydee in these later books. Bit of a shame really, It'd be nice to have
kept in touch with Borric's line a bit. (I know, I know, Aruthra and all...)

I'll have to admit I like all of Ray's characters but i think the ones that
I am most fond of are Pug and Nakor. I like Pug because obvioously we have
watched him grow from a young boy to possibly one of the most powerful mages
that Midkemia has ever seen. And Nakor because he is always good for a laugh
and has an inexhaustable supply of oranges

wow, that is my list pretty much exactly. I was soooo sad when Mara had to
do what she did regarding Hokanu.
My favorite part of that book was when Hokanu thundered through the trees
on their horses to seek his revenge on Jiro. I like Hokanu:) >> Stay informed about: Favorite characters |
