I have many favorite passages in Ulysses but one that stands out is

......each one who enters imagines himself to be the first to enter whereas he
is always the last term of a preceding series even if the first term of a
succeeding one, each imagining himself to be first, last, only and alone
whereas he is neither first nor last nor only nor alone in a series
originating in and repeated to infinity.

Anyone have any favorites they want to share?

I really like this small bit:
"-- There was every indication they would arrive at that, he. Bloom, said.

-- Who? the other, whose hand by the way was hurt, said."

And this pair:

"Having requested a quart of buttermilk this was brought and evidently
afforded relief. Asked if he had any message for the living he exhorted all
who were still at the wrong side of Mãyã to acknowledge the true path for it
was reported in devanic circles that Mars and Jupiter were out for mischief
on the eastern angle where the ram has power. It was then queried whether
there were any special desires on the part of the defunct and the reply was:
We greet you, friends of earth, who are still in the body. Mind C.K. doesn't
pile it on."

Coupled with this:

"PADDY DIGNAM
(Earnestly.) Once I was in the employ of Mr J.H. Menton, solicitor,
commissioner for oaths and affidavits, of 27 Bachelor's Walk. Now I am
defunct, the wall of the heart hypertrophied. Hard lines. The poor wife was
awfully cut up. How is she bearing it? Keep her off that bottle of sherry.
(He looks round him.) A lamp. I must satisfy an animal need. That buttermilk
didn't agree with me."<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

all of this

"Dear Henry,

I got your last letter to me and thank you very much for it. I am sorry you
did not like my last letter. Why did you enclose the stamps? I am awfully
angry with you. I do wish I could punish you for that. I called you naughty
boy because I do not like that other world. Please tell me what is the real
meaning of that word. Are you not happy in your home you poor little naughty
boy? I do wish I could do something for you. Please tell me what you think
of poor me. I often think of the beautiful name you have. Dear Henry, when
will we meet? I think of you so often you have no idea. I have never felt
myself so much drawn to a man as you. I feel so bad about. Please write me a
long letter and tell me more. Remember if you do not I will punish you. So
now you know what I will do to you, you naughty boy, if you do not write. O
how I long to meet you. Henry dear, do not deny my request before my
patience are exhausted. Then I will tell you all. Goodbye now, naughty
darling. I have such a bad headache today and write by return to your
longing

MARTHA.

P.S. Do tell me what kind of perfume does your wife use. I want to know."

and Stephen in Scylla

"-- As we, or mother Dana, weave and unweave our bodies, Stephen said, from
day to day, their molecules shuttled to and fro, so does the artist weave
and unweave his image. And as the mole on my right breast is where it was
when I was born, though all my body has been woven of new stuff time after
time, so through the ghost of the unquiet father the image of the unliving
son looks forth. In the intense instant of imagination, when the mind,
Shelley says, is a fading coal, that which I was is that which I am and that
which in possibility I may come to be. So in the future, the sister of the
past, I may see myself as I sit here now but by reflection from that which
then I shall be."
