You can join in this competition:

www.bbc.co/bigread

My vote went to an American book and it wasn't Catcher in the Rye.

GO floats to the top on alphanumeric grounds.

It struck me that most of the 'child hood favourites' were not so much
books that I had read as a child but those I had read to my own
children or seen as cinema adaptations. I can't remember what rubbish
I read as a child - probably Biggles.

Do you know, I couldn't find one book on that list that I could be bothered
to vote for? I've read about half of the list and have knowledge of the
other half with only Wuthering Heights unattempted and obviously Corelli and
Harry Potter left well alone. Catcher in the Rye is one of the most boring
and irritating books I've ever give up on. As for Lord of the Rings, that
Tolkien was a sadistic cunt, inflicting that on me. Jo Brand, a fat
comedienne long favoured by Guardian readers, said in the Radio Times that
Nineteen Eighty-Four is '..pretty much the perfect novel..' which shows how
far the plain ignorant can travel these days. It is a shame, and you will
think me fascist*, but if voting for top books was made *compulsory* we'd
have had something interesting to talk about, as it is, it's just bourgeois
onanism**

**fifty pence in the bourgeois box

*fifty pence for mentioning 'fascist'

Sarcasm? It doesn't take a lot of working out does it. Curious thing about
the way Heller's joke in uncertain taste makes prudes purr with pleasure...

Why so defensive? It wasn't sarcasm.

Okay. Well it *had* to be Catch 22 didn't it?

Simply, some could say it's a joke in poor taste, that you cannot satirise
such a calamity as war. Not saying *I* would say that, because I'm writing a
satirical play that unfolds during a horrific episode in history, but *some*
would. Some areas of conflict are deemed ok, others not.

I feel an affinity with Yossarian because when the war really started
for civilians in 1940 I was 5 years old and I was convinced that the
Germans were out to get me. I had nightmares about this and although
parents and various school friends assured me that Hitler had it in for
everybody I still took it all rather personally. Compared with others
I suffered few direct effects from the war - just a complete wipeout of
any education and a couple of incendiary bombs on the roof but
I still felt persecuted. Catch 22 encapsulated that feeling perfectly.
