Maybe everyone already knows this, but the movie is now out on video/dvd. I
happened upon it at the video store, so I thought I'd mention it in case
other people were unaware. I don't have Showtime and I've been waiting and
waiting, so I was pretty glad to finally get my hands on it. I watched it
last night, and it was pretty good. I cringed many times over the the things
they changed, like the order of certain events, the addition of an older
Marcel (James Earl Jones) narrating the story (it probably made it easier
for the viewer who hadn't read the book to follow, but I think it wasn't
necessary), and certain things that should have just come up later in the
movie but were given away earlier (I won't mention them here cause I don't
want to bother with spoiler space). But the important events were all there
I think, as were most of the characters (the Englishman comes to mind now as
someone who was left out, though he was at least spoken of), and I liked
most of the cast. Like with Interview, they seemed to pretty much get the
right points across, and capture the right atmosphere. The movie was very
long of course, over three hours (it's in two parts), but still, having read
the book, a lot of parts felt rushed (inevitable of course), but then some
parts seemed overdone and mushy. There I go complaining ... anyway, I
suggest you see it if you haven't yet.
