Just asking for a bit of help: I'm trying to gather all references to
fire and flame in the Silm, LoTR, UT, and Hobbit (and Home if you
experts on Home would like to contribute). I have a number, but I'm
sure I don't have all. Any and all references and help would be
appreciated!

Do you mean _all_ references, or only the 'significant' ones?

References in Silm, LotR, and TH shouldn't be too difficult. UT and the
HoME volumes would be harder. Has the combined HoME index appeared in
the US yet? If not, I'll be happy to see what is in there (examples
below).

HoME index entries:

Fire, The (VII) 134, 362. See Orodruin
Firebeards (XII) - One of the kindreds of the Dwarves. 301, 322
Firefoot (VI) - Suggested name for Gandalf's horse (see Narothal). 351
Fire-well, Sauron's (VII) 344; Sauron's well of fire 209, 349

Flame Imperishable, The (X) 8-9, 13, 28, 345. See (The) Secret Fire.

That reference to Sauron's fire-well looks very interesting! And
Firefoot was, I believe, used for Eomer's horse instead. And the name
Firefoot recalls that reference to Shadowfax:

"Then he sprang forward. Fire flew from his feet; night rushed over
him." (The Palantir)

I've been trying to find all, just so that I don't miss anything; then I
can ignore those that are inapplicable to the article I'm writing (which
of course I'll mention those who contributed references and rabt)

Well, for LotR a good place to start might be Blackwelder's /A Tolkien
Thesaurus/, if you can track down a copy (my university library has
one, for example). Despite the name, it's actually a concordance for
LotR: essentially every significant word (surely including "fire" and
"flame") is there, each with page references and sentence fragments
surrounding every use in the book. (I've found one or two omissions,
unfortunately, but I'm told that they were almost certainly
publisher's errors.)

This is one of those cases where you really wish you had an electronic
text (and where I would be hesitant to trust a bootleg one).

Best wishes,
