It seems to me that Flatland Phobia is just an expression of most people
wishing to live in the same place they were born. It is a rare thing for a
human to want to move away from that which is famillier. As an example the
cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were re-occupied by the survivors of the
nuclear bombings very quickly and their descendents still live in those
cities today. Another example are the cities on the slopes of Volcanoes,
and those in river valley flood zones, nature takes away their homes but if
they survive they come back and rebuild in the same place.
Americans are somewhat more likely to move around, but generally we stay in
the USA. Most often we stay in the same climate zone where we were born, be
it the rural south or the mojave dessert.
If these traits hold true for Colonial humans the vast majority of them, say
80-90%, will also be counted as 'flatlanders' because they will never leave
the worlds they were born on. Economic forces can of course influence these
trends, most of those who emmigrate to the USA are seeking a better life
than what they had 'at Home'. Even so the overwhelming majority of the US
population was born here, as were the populations of any other country you
want to use as an example.
Given these traits and a 'pioneer/homesteader' culture with a fairly high
birth rate how long until the colony worlds desire to enact birth right
restrictions like those on Earth in Known Space?
Plateau can only hold about 500 Million if it is densly inhabited like
Earth, and with adequete food resources they could have that 400 years after
the first Slowboat arrived.
Jinx, the largest human world to date, could hold 40 Billion or more and be
no more crowded than Earth because it has at least twice the habitable
surface area of the Earth, plus another two ends worth of low
pressure/vacuum territory.
How long do you think that will take after 2100 AD?
