It is/was only a limited series.

It's now been announced to be a 6 issue miniseries, I believe. Marvel
does this a lot lately, release a title as an ongoing, and then
"cancel" it when it does poorly by retroactively declaring it a
miniseries.

If no one else has coined the term, I'd like to dub this practice a
retcan.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I'd only ever heard that it was a miniseries, and that it _maybe_ could
be extended. Given Liefeld's record for completing minis, I can see why
Marvel wouldn't make it an ongoing. I've also heard rumblings of another
mini next year, but this may be the spinoff (Shatterstar? not sure) in
recent solicits.

I'll accept that. It's now part of my vocabulary.

Yep, it is a miniserie.
And later in the year 2005 a limited serie of Shatterstar will be published.

Yep. It's always been a "six to eight issue" mini.

And the Shatterstar mini was first mentioned in passing in June:

Marvel have now decided that it's a six issue miniseries, to be
immediately followed by a Shatterstar miniseries. This looks
suspiciously like another early cancellation, but then again, sales
haven't been horrendous.

Interviews with Liefeld always suggested that this series was planned as a
mini. I'd say that Marvel were wary of his track record with abandoning
titles, and didn't want to trust him with an ongoing.

Actually, you're correct, it was always solicited as a mini.

One can only hope. Or, even better, they shitcan Liefeld and put a
decent writer/artist in place. No offense to Fabian, but I saw
absolutely *nothing* of his work in those two issues I wasted my money
on.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

It was originally intended to be a mini. Later, they dropped that idea
and apparently made in an ongoing. Now it's make to mini series
status.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Which is really sad. I happen to like Shatterstar, but Liefeld makes
him unreadable.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

In defense of Fab, I belive he is only scripting X-Force, with Liefeld
providing the plots. There is only so much a writer can do, you can't turn

I'm not disagreeing, but I read the first two issues of X-Force and
failed to see even a hint of Nicieza in it. If I were him, I'd ask to
have my name removed from the credits.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

You do remember that Liefeld left pretty quickly on and Nicieza's work
on X-Force was golden after that, don't you?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
