You would think by now that I would have fully gone through
all the books my mother left me. After all, I have been
working on it for at least a year and a half and they were
only a few thousand. But this evening, I decided to pull
out from a low bookcase some a couple poetry books I had not
paid much attention to before (a 1942 Frost and an 1885
Illustrated Tennyson), and next to the Tennyson I found a
thick octavo sized book entitled "The Gilded Age". Still
thinking it was poetry, I pulled it out to read the full
information on the spine: The Gilded Age A Tale of Today by
Mark Twain & Chas. Dudley Warner. My jaw dropped. I opened
it to find that it was an 1890 printing (first edition was
1873) from the American Publishing Company in Hartford,
Connecticut "sold by subscription only". Outside of some
weakness of the front hinge, the book is in fine condition.

How I missed this before I do not know.

One never knows what one will find. Or as Cadillac Jack said, anything can
be anywhere.

We spent the weekend at my mother's house. We had other houseguests, one of
whom is Swedish. The Swedish guest remarked on the two signed etchings by
the renowned Swedish artist Anders Zorn hanging in the guest rooms. None of
us had any idea--either who the artist was or that he was so prominent:

My mother had purchased them at a flea market in Cincinnati about 25 years
ago for about $10. Based on recent auction prices on <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.artnet.com," target="_blank">www.artnet.com,</a> the
pair of etchings (both 1910) could be expected to fetch nearly $3,000.
